American sitcom The Simpsons seems to have left fans heartbroken with the death of one of its beloved characters, Marge Simpson. In the final episode of the 36th season of the show, it is shown that the beloved mother is no more.
According to The New York Post, the finale episode, titled Estranger Things, shows a flash forward scene from 35 years later, where Marge’s husband pays homage to her during her funeral.
Evident from this description, the Simpsons matriarch does not actually die in the 36th season finale of the show. This is a future prediction that the writers included. As per reports, the show has been renewed for a 40th season, and Marge Simpson will be there.
Elsewhere in the episode, Lisa and Bart debate over The Itchy & Scratchy Show, which they watch together. However, since they stopped watching it, Lisa said:
“You share a journey with your siblings that no one else will ever understand. You must never, ever, ever take that for granted.”
In the flash forward segment on The Simpsons, Lisa is shown to have become an NBA commissioner while Bart has his own not-so-traditional business. Marge also leaves behind a video for Lisa in which she says:
“My dearest hope is that you're looking out for each other and sharing a lifelong journey together.”
Meanwhile, looking at her family from heaven, Marge says:
“I’m so happy my kids are close again.”
Voice artist Pamela Hayden exits The Simpsons after more than three decades
Voice artist Pamela Hayden, who worked on The Simpsons for 35 years, left the show. She provided the voice for characters like Milhouse, Rod, Janey, and Jimbo. During an interview on The Morning Show in February 2025, she said she took a lot of vitamins to keep her voice intact.
When asked about her expectations when she first started on The Simpsons, Hayden said:
“Oh my gosh, no. When you go up for a series, you know, you just hope it gets picked up and the fact that it’s gone on this long is just amazing. I think it’s a lot of because the writing’s so smart and topical.”
When asked how she might feel hearing someone else providing the voice for the characters she had portrayed for so long, Pamela Hayden said it would likely feel strange, but she was ready to pass things on.
She hoped the next person would bring their own creativity to the role, likely a woman, since female actors traditionally voice many young male characters due to voice changes in boys.
Recalling behind-the-scenes moments on The Simpsons, she said there were many memorable ones, especially before the pandemic. She spoke highly of Lady Gaga and shared an experience with Michael Jackson.
They had been told Jackson would arrive with a large entourage, but he showed up alone, was very friendly, and complimented her voice work.
Talking about Milhouse, she said that while she didn’t grow up as a nerd herself, she appreciated his persistence. Despite constantly being knocked down, Milhouse always managed to get back up, and she admired that resilience in him.
