The Duffer Brothers are just as excited as fans are for the theatrical release of Stranger Things Season 5, as the duo opened up about what a dream come true it is to have their series be released on screens. Last month, Matt and Ross Duffer revealed that the last season of the show will have a theatrical release, "with incredible sound, picture, and a room full of fans", calling it the perfect way to celebrate the end of this iconic saga.

Now in an interview with Variety, the Duffers are talking about what their thoughts were behind this, and how the idea, which was once a dream, actually came to fruition. Speaking to the outlet, Matt Duffer said,

“Ross and I just folded. The truth is…this was in the works for a long time. Netflix came to us with the idea. It was their idea to have the finale on a separate day and we thought that was cool, specifically because we thought we could pitch this movie theater idea, which we had never pitched before, honestly.”

He further talked about how they initially had doubts about a theatrical release, as he said,

“It never really made sense to us because everyone will always ask about it. I’m like, ‘Well, it’s kind of not fun because no one’s in sync. People will have seen the episode, some people won’t have seen the episode, it’s not the same. This actually recreates and is a real movie moment because everyone’s experiencing it at the same time together. I think that’s what we’re excited about it and it’s the first time we had that opportunity.”

Of course, the theatrical release is what a lot of fans are most excited about, about getting to experience the show on the big screen with all the favorite characters and the grandeur of the premise. Stranger Things Season 5 will play in theaters starting December 31, 2025.

The beginning of the end is near in Stranger Things Season 5, the long-awaited final chapter of Netflix’s supernatural juggernaut. The show that turned a small-town mystery into a worldwide obsession returns later this year, closing out the story of Eleven and her friends as they face their darkest battle yet.

Returning to the fold are Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, and Maya Hawke, joined by newcomers Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, Alex Breaux, and Linda Hamilton.

Stranger Things Season 5 opens with The Crawl, a chilling episode that throws viewers back to 1983. Will Byers, trapped in the Upside Down, softly sings “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” before the Demogorgon reappears, dragging him to Vecna’s lair. “At long last, we can begin,” Vecna hisses, sending a vine down Will’s throat. “You and I, we’re going to do such beautiful things together.”

From that moment, it’s clear: Hawkins isn’t just haunted. It’s doomed, unless its heroes can turn the darkness right-side up, one last time.

Stranger Things Season 5 will roll out in three parts: four episodes on November 26, three more on Christmas Day, and the grand finale on New Year’s Eve. Each drop arrives at 5 p.m. PST, ensuring fans can ring in the holidays with a mix of nostalgia and nightmares.
