Emily in Paris Season 5 has officially pulled off its most surprising glow up yet as the show has climbed its way to the highest Rotten Tomatoes score the series has ever seen. It's a major turnaround for the long running hit, especially as it started off shaky with critics.
When the show premiered on December 18, early reviews placed it at 56 percent on the site, one of the lowest percentages across it's seasons. Critics initially lashed out at the show's changing setting and the brand new Rome plot point. However, the narrative has changed fast as the season now has a strong 75 percent critics' score, officially beating every previous season and setting a new series record.
The fifth season of Emily in Paris follows Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins as she takes on a leadership role overseeing the Rome branch of Agence Grateau. It adds more professional and personal stakes for her, with career consequences that feel permanent. Italy pushes her story arc further, and the season ends with the ambiguity of which city her life will go to next.
What happens in Emily in Paris 5?
Emily in Paris' fifth run takes our protagonist out of her Paris comfort zone and drops her into emotional chaos across Rome, Venica and back again. The season starts with her helping expand Agence Grateau into Rome and a risky decision at work that leads to genuine consequences.
Romantically, things initially start looking up for Emily, as the season begins with her romance with Marcello; a dreamy, sensual relationship that soon runs its course. Although things are initially going well, a confusing chain of events leads Emily to believe that Marcello is proposing to her and she immediately says no. This brings them both to the realization that they're very different and deserve to move on to different paths as they please. She ends the relationship and returns to Paris choosing herself over another fairytale.
On the other hand, some steady advances take place in her and Gabriel's arc as they meet throughout the season although nothing romantic happens. Emily helps him get a chef's job in Greece and it's clear that Gabriel still has feelings for her. In the last episode, we see him getting to know about her singlehood, and shooting his shot as he sends her a postcard and invites her to Greece.
Whether she accepts the invitation or not is another story, but it does plant the premise of next season being rooted in Greece. Netflix has not yet greenlit a sixth season, but with all the cliffhangers this season, fans can take aim at a positive bet.
Emily in Paris is available to stream on Netflix.
