Morrison-Hensley High School will no longer be in session, as FX has canceled English teacher, the beloved comedy series created by Brian Jordan Alvarez. Alvarez led the series as Evan Marquez, the titular teacher at an American High School.

The cancelation news comes six weeks after the series dropped its sophomore season on Hulu. Unlike Season 1, the second season of English Teacher was dropped in its entirety on September 26.

The show follows Evan Marquez's adventures at the American High School, where he finds himself at the intersection of professional, political and personal aspects. In addition to Alvarez, the show also stars Stephanie Koenig as History teacher Gwen Sanders, Sean Patton as gym teacher Markie Hillridge, Carmen Christopher as the school counselor Rick Santana and Enrico Colantoni as Principal Grant Moretti.

FX cancels English Teacher after two seasons

The Alvarez-created and led series debuted its freshman season on Hulu in September 2024 and received positive reviews from the audience and critics alike. Season 1 currently sits at a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 98% and was renewed for another season in February 2025.

Season 2 was a rocky affair and struggled to find its footing, following the s*xual assault allegations against Alvarez. Soon after his series debuted on Hulu, Alvarez came into public scrutiny over these allegations made by former colleague Jon Ebeling. The actor maintained that their relationship was “entirely consensual.”

However, FX paid no heed to these allegations and English Teacher was renewed for a second season. But the sophomore outing struggled to find its footing and recorded a low viewership. While the second season currently sits at a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%, it failed to recreate the momentum and magic of the first season, which was attributed to Alvarez's allegations. Mere weeks after its conclusion, FX has decided to pull the plug and the show will not return for further seasons on Hulu. FX has yet to issue an official statement or a reason behind the show's cancellation.

In addition to these near-perfect scores on RT and critical success, English Teacher Season 1 was also nominated for the Film Independent Spirit Awards, Critics' Choice Awards and WAG Awards.

Produced by FX Productions, the series is executive produced by Alvarez, Paul Simms, Jonathan Krisel, Jake Bender & Zach Dunn, Dave King and Kathryn Dean.

As revealed in many interviews, Alvarez leaned on inspiration from his family. He was especially inspired by his mother and sister, who are both teachers in Tennessee, which gave him the idea to set his series in the suburbs of Austin.

Following English Teacher, Alvarez voiced the character of Van in Ryan Gillis' 2025 animated series StuGo. He also appeared in Gerard Johnstone's 2025 science fiction action film M3GAN 2.0 as Cole.

You can stream English Teacher Seasons 1 and 2 on Hulu.
