Marvel is giving fans a welcome surprise this summer as Eyes of Wakanda, the upcoming animated series expanding the Black Panther universe, is hitting Disney+ sooner than expected. Originally set to premiere on August 27, the series will now release all four episodes on August 1, 2025, making it one of the season’s most anticipated early drops.
The series, created and directed by storyboard veteran Todd Harris under Ryan Coogler’s executive production, dives deep into the legacy of the Hatut Zaraze, Wakanda’s covert warriors. These elite operatives are sent across centuries to recover stolen vibranium relics and protect the kingdom’s secrets.
At the centre, we have Noni, who is on a mission to go against the Lion, a Wakandan who took up the land's technology for his own gain and has turned himself into a cruel warlord.
More details about Eyes of Wakanda
Eyes of Wakanda has been developed by Ryan Coogler, who is a mastermind and a genius when it comes to the Wakanda lore. Showrunner Todd Harris talked about the series in an interview with Entertainment Weekly and said,
"My goal for the whole show was to do the thing that a movie has trouble doing, which is making the world bigger. It is a nation with multiple zip codes. It was mostly just expanding the backdrop of the world that Ryan was able to establish, with just a little bit more time and a few more opportunities at the watering hole. These things have been around for this long, really spreading out the mythology of Wakanda."
Harris crafted the tone around a genre mix that spans Predator, Gladiator, and even Jackie Chan’s kung‑fu flair.
His goal? To expand Wakanda’s world beyond what the films could, showing not just Black Panther but the principles shaping the nation. Visually, the show blends hand‑painted animation inspired by Afro‑American artists like Ernie Barnes and Dean Cornwell, bringing vibranium‑fueled history to life with artistic gravity.
Speaking to SFX Magazine, Harris talked about projects that inspired him and said,
"We were firing on all cylinders making up stuff, and then money, time and reality makes you focus and harness what we got. We picked our favourites of our favourites. I would say they're a love letter to some of my favourite movies. If you like Conan The Barbarian, if you like Gladiator, if you like Jackie Chan movies, if you like Terminator, if you like Predator, they’re going to serve a bit to that all over the place."
Marvel is smartly placing Eyes of Wakanda just a week after Fantastic Four: First Steps. It’s a strategic double drop that sets fans up for a summer binge of bold, stylized storytelling.
Eyes of Wakanda will be available to stream on August 1, 2025, on Disney+.
