The first trailer for The Paper just dropped, and it is as chaotic as it is full of nostalgia. The documentary crew from The Office has jumped ship to Toledo, Ohio, where they are filming a dying local paper called Toledo Truth Teller.

Domhnall Gleeson plays Ned Sampson, the optimistic new editor-in-chief. Sabrina Impacciatore’s Esmerelda is ready to sting with her sass, and yes, Oscar Martínez, played by Oscar Núñez, is back, and he is not here for the cameras.

“Several years ago, a documentary crew filmed the story of Dunder Mifflin. Now they've found a new subject.”

That's how the trailer starts.

As we are back in the world of a mockumentary and observing the mundane lives of some officegoers, Tim Key opens the trailer as his character ranks paper-based items by quality:

“Toilet tissue, toilet seat protectors and local newspapers.”

Enter Esmeralda, proudly presenting her journalistic masterpiece:

“You Won’t Believe How Much Ben Affleck Tipped His Limo Driver.”

Domhnall Gleeson’s Ned Sampson arrives as the new editor-in-chief, met with skepticism. Chelsea Frei’s character asks:

“Have you read this paper?”

Ned’s reply?

“It sucks, but we are going to make it better.”

He remains hopeful despite the newsroom’s lack of experience, one staffer’s only writing credit is a junior high paper, and another’s is tweeting.

Still, Ned believes in the team, calling them “highly motivated, tenacious Buckeyes.” The trailer ends with The Office veteran Oscar Núñez spotting the crew and groaning:

“Not again. I’m not agreeing to any of this.”

Twenty years after The Office turned the soul-sucking grind of 9-to-5 into comedy gold, the mockumentary style it made iconic is back, with a brand new workplace, a brand new disaster, and a very familiar camera crew.

Domhnall Gleeson stars as Ned Sampson, the painfully optimistic new editor-in-chief. Sabrina Impacciatore, fresh off her White Lotus chaos, plays Esmeralda, the managing editor who proudly pens hard-hitting stories. The rest of the cast includes Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Ramona Young, Gbemisola Ikumelo, and more.

Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey recently visited the set of The Paper, sharing on the Today Show that they reconnected with many familiar faces behind the scenes. Kinsey even called them “our extended family.” While Oscar Nuñez is the only original cast member confirmed so far, more returns could be on the horizon. John Krasinski told Entertainment Tonight he would be back in a heartbeat if Greg Daniels called:

“He calls, I’ll show up."

The Paper is created by Michael Koman and Greg Daniels, with executive producers including Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The show is fictionally being recorded by the same documentary crew that worked with Dundler Mifflin, bringing back a lot of nostalgia and old vibes.

The Paper will premiere on September 4, 2025, on Peacock.
