As HBO prepares to launch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, it has been quietly revealed that the world of Ser Duncan the Tall and his sharp minded squire could stretch far beyond what readers already know. Behind the scenes, the author has outlined plans for roughly 10 to 12 additional Dunk and Egg stories, mapping out their lives well past the three novellas currently published.

Speaking to The National, Ira Parker who is the showrunner of the HBO series spoke about the future of more Dunk and Egg stories fans will get to explore. Speaking to the outlet he said,

“He has shared with me about 10 to 12 more little outlines for books, for novellas, taking Dunk and Egg all the way through their life. Right now, we’re focused on one, and we’ll see how the world responds to that. We’re making two at the moment. Hopefully, everybody likes it and we get to keep doing these. Certainly, I love doing it. I love writing in this world, and it’s a wonderful story. So, I hope we get to make as many of these as possible.”

Martin has always spoken fondly of Dunk and Egg, often calling The Hedge Knight his favorite story set in Westeros. That affection carries over into A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' creative process. Parker has described their collaboration as unusually close, with Martin reviewing scripts, asking questions, and shaping decisions.

In the past, the author has talked about wanting to go further into both the characters' lore as he wrote on his blog in 2014,

“It has always been my intent to write a whole series of novellas about Dunk and Egg, chronicling their entire lives. At various times in various interviews, I may have mentioned seven novellas, or 10, or 12, but none of that is set in stone. There will be as many novellas as it takes to tell their tale, start to finish."

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is shaping up to be the return to Westeros that everyone has asked for. Set about a century before Game of Thrones, the show adapts George R. R. Martin’s beloved Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas and this time there's less thrones and dragons and more about honor, survival and two beloved characters.

The story follows Ser Duncan the Tall, played by Peter Claffey, a lowborn hedge knight trying to live up to a code he barely understands himself. At his side is Egg, portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell, a sharp tongued squire who just happens to be Prince Aegon Targaryen. Their bond sits at the heart of the show.

The show has already been renewed for another season with the first season premiering this year on HBO Max.
