Jake Borelli is officially back! The latest Grey’s Anatomy promo has confirmed what fans have been waiting and longing for — Levi Schmitt will be returning to Seattle, and he’s got an important role to play in Jo and Link’s marriage.

Jake Borelli returns to officiate Jo and Link’s rushed wedding

The surprise came towards the end of Grey’s Anatomy Episode 2116, when fans were hit with a wedding and an even more surprising guest.

Jake Borelli, who was last seen in Episode 2107 before Levi Schmitt left for Texas, is now officially set to make a return in Episode 2117, titled “Love You Like a Love Song.”

His character has been off the hooks ever since he accepted a pediatric research opportunity, but he’s re-entering the story — as the officiant at Jo and Link’s wedding.

Borelli's comeback isn’t just meant to be an accidental cameo to please fans. His comeback was insinuated at months earlier during his exit interview, where he mentioned that he was’

“…very hopeful that Levi will come back…”

In an interview with Deadline, he now adds;

“I think the audience is interested to see what Levi is up to…I couldn’t imagine the birth of those babies without Levi bending the world to get there.”

Even though fans guessed that he could perhaps show up during the time of Jo’s delivery, it seems to be like he’s stepping up for something just as touching — the day she ties the knot.

Jake Borelli joins the growing list of returning Grey’s Anatomy alumni

Jake Borelli’s comeback adds to the tendency of getting back familiar faces to pop up during this season.

Just like Greg Germann and Jesse Williams, Borelli’s comeback jogs the memory of long-time fans that Grey Sloan remains a permanent home — no matter how far the characters may wander off to.

Borelli, who was on Grey’s Anatomy for about 7 seasons, left when Levi moved to Texas with his boyfriend, James. Even then, Borelli hadn’t wrapped his head around actually coming back.

“I think we also have this wonderful opportunity to have him grow off camera, and then to have him come back at some point and really be this boss that we know he can be…”

While the return isn’t quite revolving around the ‘hospital’ side of the drama, it does knock into something just as significant.

With Jo and Levi’s to be wedded in the next episode, Borelli’s presence also underlines the emotional response this episode is bound to receive.

Jake Borelli coming back to reprise the role of Levi Schmitt’s is more than just a guest appearance— it’s a nod to the character’s long-lasting impact on a show that’s been up and running for years.

With Grey’s Anatomy nearing its season finale, Borelli’s comeback teases that the stakes are only getting higher and bigger.
