Landman is Taylor Sheridan's latest creation, following his success with massively popular shows like Yellowstone, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, and Special Ops: Lioness. The series, which premiered on Paramount+ in November 2024, features a stellar cast that this article will explore in a bit.

Jon Hamm, who plays the role of the oilfield owner Monty Miller in Landman, has now talked about the audition process for Taylor Sheridan shows. During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, the actor stated that instead of taking auditions in a studio or a room, the creator takes people to his ranch, where he tells them about his vision and what he wants from their character:

“[Sheridan] has this massive ranch down in West Texas in Weatherford – just west of Fort Worth. You go down there and he goes, 'This is what I'm thinking, this is what I want to do. What do you think?' And you go, 'Great, yeah, I want to do that.' That's it.”

Jon Hamm called Taylor Sheridan’s method ‘the greatest audition process’ as the actors get a real picture of what is expected from them, instead of being asked to read dialogue in a room full of executives:

“It's the greatest audition process ever. You don't have to sit in a room and wait somewhere in Studio City and look at nine guys that look like you. He just goes, 'I want you, come down here, let's talk about it, and then we'll do the show.’”

Hamm’s performance in Landman has been well appreciated. His character, Monty Miller, is Tommy Norris’ longtime friend and boss. As the head of the oil company M-Tex, he has to oversee the rig's operations while protecting his land and his family from threats.

Sadly, Miller suffers a heart attack in the first season and dies, making Tommy the company’s new leader. Since the character’s arc has come to an end, Hamm is not expected to make an appearance in Landman Season 2, which has already commenced filming.

Set in West Texas, the show tells the story of the workers and the owners of a petroleum company amid an oil boom that has affected not only the economy but also the climate and politics. At the center of the narrative is Tommy Norris, played by Billy Bob Thornton.

Created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, the show also stars Ali Larter as Angela Norris, Demi Moore as Cami Miller, Jacob Lofland as Cooper Norris, Michelle Randolph as Ainsley Norris, Kayla Wallace as Rebecca Falcone, James Jordan as Dale Bradley, and Paulina Chavez as Ariana Medina.

Landman Season 1 is available to stream on Paramount+.
