Sherri Papini’s alleged kidnapping incident has been made into a documentary. The mother of two faked her own kidnapping a decade ago and was later convicted of concealing the truth from the FBI. The new docuseries, Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie, will be out on May 26, 2025.
However, in the documentary, she seems to have come up with another version of the story, saying that everything she mentioned was true. As seen in the trailer, the video opens with her voice, saying:
“Haven't you ever lied? And then has that lie been blown up? I went missing in 2016 was gone for 22 days. I was tortured. I was branded. I was chained to a wall all of that is true. I did keep some secrets from you though.”
Towards the end of the trailer, Papini said:
“I am Sherri Papini. I was abducted and I was tortured and the FBI said I made it all up. I really challenge anybody watching this film, ‘How truthful are you?’”
The story goes back to 2016, when Papini went missing, but she was found on a California roadside. She later alleged that her abductors allowed her to leave.
In 2022, she was arrested and was found guilty of making false claims and was sentenced to jail for 18 months. In a clip of the documentary viewed by TMZ, Sherri Papini said:
“It's so much more complex than pointing the finger and saying you're a liar and I wish more than anything I could have been more truthful.”
Why did Sherri Papini’s ex-husband want to change the kids’ names?
Sherri Papini’s two kids are now under the sole custody of her ex-husband, Keith Papini. Keith went through the dilemma of changing his kids’ last names. In a 2024 statement to People Magazine, Keith shared that during a conversation, his son asked if the situation they were discussing was related to their mother.
When Keith responded that it might be, his son expressed that they shouldn’t have to change their last name because of their mother’s actions. That moment made Keith realize how mature and insightful his son was.
Although he had concerns as a parent about how their unique last name might affect them in the future, he said that both of his kids were doing well and living happy, thriving lives. Speaking about the impact of Sherri Papini’s alleged lies on his kids, Keith said:
“A lot of their childhood years were, in my opinion, stolen from them. So my biggest goal is giving them a happy and healthy life and surrounding them with loving people. And a lot of those conversations that I've had to have, no parents should ever have to have with their kids.”
In another clip from the upcoming documentary, Sherri Papini expressed that the version of herself being shown to the public didn’t feel real. She believed it was a made-up image that fit the media’s version of events. According to her, people saw her as someone who had tricked everyone, but she felt that portrayal wasn’t truly who she was.
