Dept. Q premiered on Netflix recently and has already entered the top 10 charts on the streaming platform. It tells the story of a ragtag team of detectives, led by Carl Morck, who work in the basement of their Edinburgh office and investigate cold cases.

All nine episodes of the crime thriller were released on May 29, 2025, and audiences are now awaiting updates on a potential second chapter. While Netflix has not yet renewed the series, co-creator Scott Frank has revealed that he is willing to make Dept. Q Season 2, and already has an idea for it. In an interview with Collider, Frank said:

“I do know what I want to do next. I do have the story in mind for the next season.”

Scott Frank is willing to make Dept. Q Season 2

Dept. Q is based on Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen’s novel series Department Q, which features 10 books. Scott Frank disclosed that he wants to adapt the second book of the novel series, Disgrace, into the second season of the Netflix show. He also added that he is thinking of cutting the number of episodes down from nine to six:

“This is based on a series of books. The second book in the series is quite good, so I’ve got a great idea for a second season. It is another cold case and also a current case, at the same time, that they’re looking into. So, I would do that. I don’t know that I would necessarily do nine episodes. I might just do six next time. We’ll see.”

While Frank is open to working on the show again, Netflix has not yet greenlit Dept. Q Season 2. But the series has an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is already topping viewership charts, and hence, a second season does seem plausible.

Lead actor Matthew Goode, who was also present during the interview, talked about how he wants the story to pan out in the potential Season 2. The actor said he would like to see the personal aspects of Carl Morck’s life, including his relationship with his daughters:

“It’s also exciting to possibly see a bit more of what Carl’s life is and his home life, which is a very interesting throuple that’s going on. I don’t want to put any ideas into the genius’ (Scott Frank) brain, but I want to see what it’s like back at Akram’s house with his daughters. There’s a lot of stuff to play around with.”

Apart from Goode, the show stars Mark Bonnar as Stephen Burns, Alexej Manvelov as Akram Salim, Jamie Sives as James Hardy, Chloe Pirrie as Merritt Lingard, Leah Byrne as Rose, Kate Dickie as Moira Jacobson, and Kelly Macdonald as Dr. Rachel Irving.

Dept. Q is available to stream on Netflix.
