Canadian actress Kim Cattrall is known for her portrayal of Samantha Jones in the Sex and the City franchise. However, when the sequel series, And Just Like That…, came out in 2021, Jones was not a major character in it.

On June 12, 2025, the actress was interviewed by Jane Mulkerrins from The Times, where she shared candid details about her life. Speaking of Samantha Jones, Kim Cattrall said:

“I created a fantastic character that I loved, and I put a lot of love in it. And if I’m remembered only for that, then that’s really OK.”

Interestingly, the interview piece noted that the actress passed up her role at least four times before finally agreeing to do it. The reason, she recalls, was her age, as she believed being 41 wasn’t perceived as attractive by the viewers for that role. She added:

“Self-inflicted ageism. Well, that changed, 40 became s*xy. It became, ‘Man, let’s have more of that.’”

Although Kim Cattrall is not a series regular on And Just Like That…, she did have a cameo appearance during the Season 2 finale. According to a report by Variety, she shot the role on March 22, 2023.

Patricia Field, who was the designer in Sex and the City, returned to get Samantha Jones ready for the cameo. Speaking to Mulkerrins about the character, Cattrall said:

“She wasn’t a nymphomaniac, well, some people might have thought she was, but she was just enjoying the main course. Everyone else was nibbling on the appetisers when she was going for the steak. And it was always on her terms that I always insisted on.”

Where did Kim Cattrall draw the line between herself and Samantha Jones?

Elsewhere in the Times interview, Kim Cattrall shared that when she first moved to New York, she didn’t own a TV but used to listen to radio dramas alone in the dark. At one point, she was in grief after her father died from Alzheimer’s in 2012.

To cope, Cattrall returned to New York and started cognitive behavioural therapy to relearn how to sleep. During this time, she also kept a reflective diary, where she noted her feelings and challenges each day. Kim Cattrall also drew a comparison between herself and Samantha Jones, saying:

“I’m the antithesis of her in many ways. I’m a serial monogamist, and then some.”

She also opened up about losing her brother to suicide, explaining how it made her question what signs she might have missed or if there was more she could have done. She stated that in time, she accepted that it was that person’s decision and not something she could have changed, no matter how much she wanted to.

Though she often wished she hadn’t gone through such a painful chapter, Kim Cattrall realized that it ultimately led her to meet Russell Thomas, someone who brought joy and companionship into her life. Despite the hardship, she believed she gained valuable lessons and came out the other side with someone special.
