Laney College athletic director and legendary football coach John Beam, who was also featured in Netflix's Last Chance U Season 5, was shot on Thursday near the Oakland, California community college’s football field. The shooting sent John Beam into a critical condition, with 'unspecified' injuries and he was immediately transported to a hospital.
According to Deadline, Laney College initially withheld the identity of the victim, only revealing that a senior member of their athletic staff had been shot. Their statement read as follows:
“A senior member of our athletic staff was shot on campus in the Laney Field House. The individual was immediately transported to a local hospital, and we are keeping them—and their loved ones—in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for their privacy, we are not releasing their name at this moment.”

Netflix Last Chance U: Legendary football coach John Beam was shot on campus
John Beam's shooting incident has left everyone stunned in the Bay Area. Oakland PD’s Assistant Chief James Beere arrived on scene quickly after the incident and the school was placed on lockdown. It was initially assumed to be an active-shooting case. Once authorities were convinced that the situation was under control, the lockdown was lifted and classes will resume on Friday.
Beere and his team have profiled a potential suspect:
“It’s a male; unknown race, wearing all dark clothing and a black hoodie,”
John Beam started his legendary run at Laney College as a running backs coach in 2004 and was promoted to an offensive coordinator in 2005. While John Beam has served as a football coach in the Bay Area for years, he was named the head coach of Laney College in 2012. Beam has coached more than 20 NFL players, seven of whom even went on to play in Super Bowls.
Netflix's docu-series Last Chance U follows the struggles of college football players and their coaches as they try to earn a scholarship from Division 1 schools. John Beam and his team were featured on the fifth and final season of Last Chance U on Netflix, which brought national success for the legendary coach.
In an interview with ABC7 Bay Area, John Beam expressed his gratitude to Netflix for bringing their story to the small screen:
“Overall, the experience of it was unbelievable. I think they did tell the story of Oakland, Laney, Skyline, myself and our whole community in a really good way. But, what I hope it brings, really, is some ideals in the community and the CCCAA level that we need to support our students better.”
Last Chance U, the eight-part docu-series, followed John Beam and his team as they practiced and struggled to win scholarships. The series highlighted Beam's different coaching styles and his overall relationship with his students.
