The end is officially here for Jeremy Renner's Mayor of Kingstown, as the show has been renewed for a fifth and final season, with an eight-episode run. Taylor Sheridan's crime thriller show has been going steady for four seasons, and as fans started speculating if it will be renewed for another season, the confirmation is finally here, along with news of its ending, as reported by Deadline.

This is the first time for a show created by Sheridan to take the planned ending route ever since Paramount+ reshuffled its leadership following Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount Global. However, even then, the show's ending seems to have deviated from the original plan, as co-creator Hugh Dillon had previously talked about a potential seventh season and what it would explore. In an interview with ScreenRant, Dillon stated,

“[Sheridan] has an ending for it in Season 7. Whether it goes that far or that’s where we get [who knows], but he has an ending, and everyone knows about it. Our goal is to get to that Season 7, because that’s as far as we can get, because that’s where he’s always had it. 15 years ago, he had it. 15 years ago, ‘So, here’s how it’s starting, Mitch is going to get killed off in the first 10 pages, and season 7, episode 10, this is where Mike’s going to be.”

What is Mayor of Kingstown about?

In contrast to what the name might suggest, Mayor of Kingstown is not about politics. At least the kind you are used to seeing on screen. The show is a brutal exploration of power, survival, and the dangers of a town made inside cages. Created by Sheridan and Dillon, the series is set in the fictional town of Kingstown, Michigan, where prisons are the main industry. Guards, cops, inmates, gangs, lawyers, and politicians all orbit the same brutal system. Nobody is clean, and nobody gets out untouched.

In the middle of it all is Mike McLusky, played by Renner, who inherits the unofficial title of "mayor" after his brother Mitch is killed in the very first episode. He then becomes a mediator between criminals on the inside and the power players on the outside, negotiating ceasefires, burying bodies, making deals with gang leaders, and walking a very thin line between keeping the peace and becoming a part of the violent world.

Across four seasons, the story of Mayor of Kingstown expands to include prison riots, cartel alliances, Russian mob wars, collapsing institutions, and power vacuums that never stay empty for long. Although it had a rocky start, it slowly climbed its way up as it received praise from audiences, and with the fifth and final season ready to strike, it would be interesting to see where it leaves Mike McLusky.
