Murderbot might be one of 2025’s most beloved sci-fi hits, but behind the scenes, even its stars weren’t sure it would survive the algorithm. David Dastmalchian, who plays the prickly and brilliant Gurathin, confessed that while filming the show, he had zero faith it would ever be seen. Not because it wasn’t good, but because it was too good. Too weird, too unique, too beautifully unhinged, he thought no one was ever going to see this.

Fast forward to now: a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score, a season 2 renewal, and a fandom that’s all in. Safe to say, Dastmalchian was deliciously wrong. Speaking to Screen Rant during the San Diego Comic-Con, the actor said,

"I was like, "This is so special. It's so unique, and I don't think there's ever been something quite like this, and I love it so much that no one's ever going to see it." It's just that maybe, I don't know, it's like fear, future tripping, or whatever. I remember making Murderbot, and just thinking, "This show is so special, and it's so weird that people it's not going to get seen."

He then talked about the series' success as he added,

"And then now that it's built this amazing audience, and the fans really love it, and people who were fans of Martha Wells' book series seem to really approve of what we've done makes me feel so grateful. Martha is a genius, but Chris and Paul Weitz, who've adapted it, are geniuses themselves, and Skarsgård carries that show. I get to just be a little part of it. It's an awesome experience."

When Murderbot dropped on Apple TV+ in May 2025, nobody expected a rogue security unit with anxiety and a soap opera addiction to become the internet’s newest comfort character, but here we are. Adapted from Martha Wells’ The Murderbot Diaries, the show is part sci-fi, part existential therapy session, and somehow, 100% vibes.

Alexander Skarsgård plays the titular ‘Murderbot,’ a sentient security robot who’s hacked its own governor module so it can stop taking orders and start bingeing its favorite drama, Sanctuary Moon. It wants absolutely nothing to do with humans, and yet, it keeps saving them. The show balances dry sarcasm with heartbreakingly tender moments, all wrapped in tight 30-minute episodes that hit harder than they should.

Critics are obsessed. It’s sitting pretty with a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and everyone’s calling it one of the best sci-fi series Apple’s ever done. With a brilliant cast and a crew that gave justice to the source material perfectly, the show is now looking forward to its next season, and fans are already anticipating it.

Murderbot is available to stream on Apple TV+.
