Netflix has officially stepped up to work on a live-action project for Assassin's Creed, bringing the iconic video game to life for fans who have waited for the project for years. In collaboration with Ubisoft, the series will be run by Roberto Patino and David Wiener, who will also serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers.

Launched in 2007 by the French video game publisher Ubisoft, Assassin's Creed has been one of the most popular video games among fans of the franchise, and the series has been in development for the last five years.

The show's logline reads,

“Assassin’s Creed is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”

Showrunners Wiener and Patino made a joint statement about the project, where they said,

“We’ve been fans of Assassin’s Creed since its release in 2007. Every day we work on this show, we come away excited and humbled by the possibilities that Assassin’s Creed opens to us. Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story — about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith. It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance.

They further added,

“But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time. And it’s about what we stand to lose as a species, when those connections break. We’ve got an amazing team behind us with the folks at Ubisoft and our champions at Netflix, and we’re committed to creating something undeniable for fans all over the planet.”

More details on the show are awaited for now.

Hollywood's first attempt at bringing Assassin's Creed to life was in 2016 when Ubisoft launched the game as a movie franchise. Directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael Fassbender as the lead, the film delved deeper into an original story instead of leaning on one game for the inspiration. Fassbender was joined by stars like Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, and Brendan Gleeson.

Fassbender played Cal Lynch, a man forced by the mysterious Abstergo Foundation to relive the memories of his ancestor, Aguilar, an assassin in 15th-century Spain during the Inquisition. The central chase? A powerful artifact called the Apple of Eden.

Despite the flashy action and high production value, the film didn’t quite land with critics or fans. The plot felt muddled to many, and while some viewers appreciated that it tried something new, it still fell into the same traps most video game movies do. A sequel was in the works, but after Disney acquired Fox in 2019, the project was quietly shelved.

With that, hopes are high for Netflix's Assassin's Creed series, and fans are keeping their fingers crossed for a project that will do justice to the iconic franchise.
