DCI Carl Morck will return as the head of the cold case department once again, as Netflix has renewed its hit crime thriller Dept. Q for Season 2.
Created by Scott Frank (The Queen's Gambit), the show spent six weeks on Netflix's Top 10 charts after its debut on May 29, 2025. In addition, Matthew Goode will return as the sometimes cranky but very competent Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck with his team of misfit officers.
Netflix executives Mona Qureshi and Manda Levin announced the renewal news as:
“We are raring to return to Carl Morck and his band of glorious misfits at Dept. Q. Scott Frank brought us best-in-class storytelling and thrilled Netflix audiences worldwide. We can’t wait to see what Morck and the gang uncover in Season 2 … Edinburgh, we’re back.”
The crime drama series, which received positive reviews from critics and audiences, is based on a series of books by Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen. Season 1 adapted The Keeper of Lost Causes, where Morck and his team were assigned the case of Merritt Lingard, a missing lawyer. While the details about Season 2 are scarce for now, Frank has expressed his desire to adapt Olsen's second book, The Absent One.
More on this in our story.
Carl Morck and his team of misfits will return in Dept. Q Season 2
Expanding on Olsen's world of Scottish mysteries, Netflix has finally renewed Dept. Q Season 2, three months after its debut.
Expressing his gratitude for the renewal, Frank said in a statement to Netflix Tudum:
“I’m grateful to the folks at Netflix, as well as our shining cast and crew, for once more risking their careers to enable my folly.''
Goode added:
“I’d like to thank Netflix for giving us the opportunity to further investigate Dept. Q’s storylines. We have a wonderful cast and crew, headed by our resident genius Scott Frank. I cannot wait to read what comes from his magic quill!”
Goode's Morck will return with his team of brilliant detectives, including Alexej Manvelov as Akram, Jamie Sives as Hardy, and Leah Byrne as Rose. Production for Season 2 will once again start in Edinburgh, which will become a perfect backdrop for another gripping mystery in Season 2.
While the plot details for Season 2 are not confirmed yet, The Absent One follows the murder case of a brother and a sister, which appears to be solved until it is assigned to DCI Carl Morck. His team pieces together the details of these murders and uncovers buried truths.
Season 1 of Dept. Q is streaming on Netflix.
