Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada), the fierce warrior and manslayer, will return as Netflix has renewed Last Samurai Standing for Season 2. The Japanese action series, which debuted on November 13, is a live-action adaptation of Naoki Prize-winning author Shogo Imamura's best-selling historical fiction novel Ikusagami, illustrated by Katsumi Tatsuzawa.

Writer-director Michihito Fujii expressed his gratitude for Last Samurai Standing Season 2 renewal news in an interview with Netflix Tudum:

“I’m honored to say that the series has officially been greenlit for a second season. It gives me chills just thinking about all the exciting days that lie ahead with this amazing production team led by Junichi Okada. There’s no doubt that Season 2 will be even bigger and better than the first.”

Last Samurai Standing stars Junichi Okada, a Japanese actor and fight choreographer, in the lead role of Shujiro Saga, the undefeated samurai who participates in the deadly competition at Tenryū-ji Temple in Kyoto during the Meiji era (late 19th century), along with 292 fighters. While Shujiro Saga was once a celebrated samurai, he participates in the game for his family's survival, as it promises a grand prize of ¥100,000 for the winner.

More on this in the story.

Shujiro's saga will continue in Last Samurai Standing Season 2

Last Samurai Standing spent four consecutive weeks on Netflix's Top 10 in Japan after its debut, garnering positive reviews from audiences and critics. Its historical setting and action-packed sequences made it a Global hit and the series reached No. 1 on the Netflix Weekly Global Top 10 for Non-English Series.

Its impressive debut certainly paved the way for a second season, which will be even more intense and action-packed, as Okada promised his fans via Netflix Tudum:

“I’m excited to get back into this wild world and once again charge into battle with the production team. We hope to make the next season even more energetic and action-packed.”

While Netflix is gradually expanding with many impressive Korean originals, Last Samurai Standing was a historic win for Japanese productions. In addition to its spectacular debut on Netflix, it became the first all-Japanese production to be nominated at the Critics' Choice Awards in the Best Foreign Language Series category.

In addition to Okada, who also serves as a producer and action choreographer, the series stars Yumia Fujisaki as Futaba, Kaya Kiyohara as Iroha, Masahiro Higashide as Kyojin, Shota Sometani as Kamuykocha and many more talented Japanese stars.

While the freshman season saw Shujiro navigating the deadly competition 'Kodoku', the upcoming season will likely uncover the mastermind behind this fierce battle. However, the competition is far from over and Shujiro will return with Futaba, a desperate girl who managed to survive the game of survival in Season 1. With Gentosai hunting the fallen samurais in a dangerous chase, it will be interesting to see what's in store for our titular warrior in Last Samurai Standing Season 2.
