Apple TV’s new sci fi drama Pluribus has already sparked a wave of theories, and it is only a few episodes in. Created by Gilligan, the show follows Carol Sturka, played by Rhea Seehorn, who finds herself among the last humans untouched by an alien virus that has merged almost everyone else into a cheerful, unified hive of mind called the Others. The title nods to the phrase e pluribus unum, which translates to out of many, one, and that idea hangs over everything happening in this strange new world.

Gilligan spoke to Entertainment Weekly about how he came up with the show, as he told the outlet,

"I got interested in the idea of a world in which everyone was nice. There was no way you could insult them. There was no way you could hurt their feelings. But they would do anything and everything for you. What interests me about this show and the possibilities for it. Is that people, I hope, can watch it and say, 'What would the world be like if everybody got along?' There’s probably a bit of wish fulfillment in the idea of this show."

Set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Pluribus opens with humanity already transformed. Only thirteen people are immune to the Joining, and they each deal with their isolation in very different ways. Carol, a successful fantasy romance author, refuses to be soothed by the forced harmony around her and keeps pushing against the unnatural calm. The series mixes bleak humor with sharp commentary, especially as Carol meets other survivors who have chosen wildly different routes.

Pluribus is streaming on Apple TV.
