Prime Video has canceled comedy drama Étoile just over a month after its premiere. The development comes as a surprise, as the show received rave reviews from the critics and holds an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

What makes the cancellation even more surprising is that Prime Video had already given a two-season order for the show before its release, but has decided to axe it after only one season.

Created by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, Étoile is set in the world of ballet and revolves around two ballet companies that come up with an unconventional idea to save their institutions.

Étoile premiered on Prime Video on April 24, 2025, with all eight episodes of the first season being dropped together. However, just six weeks later, the streaming platform has decided not to move ahead with a second season, which had already been ordered before the series premiere.

As per a report by Deadline, despite positive reviews, the performance of the show could not justify its massive budget. Since the premise was set in both New York and Paris, with ballet at the center of the narrative, Étoile was an expensive series to produce. However, it failed to make a mark in the viewership ratings and only spent a few days on Prime Video’s Top 10 shows list.

Meanwhile, the first season had already set up a number of storylines for the second installment, which would not remain unfinished. The show follows two ballet companies based in New York and Paris.

As the world begins to forget the art of ballet, these institutions are threatened. The two companies then decide to start an exchange program and swap their star performers. The official synopsis of the series reads:

“Set in New York City and Paris, the eight-episode Étoile follows the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies, as they embark on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions by swapping their most talented stars.”

Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino previously found success on Prime Video with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which aired five seasons between 2017 and 2023. Étoile, on the other hand, could not create the same magic.

The series starred Luke Kirby as Jack McMillan, Charlotte Gainsbourg as Geneviève Lavigne, David Alvarez as Gael Rodriguez, Taïs Vinolo as Mishi Duplessis, Ivan du Pontavice as Gabin Roux, Gideon Glick as Tobias Bell, David Haig as Nicholas Leutwylek, LaMay Zhang as SuSu Li, and Simon Callow as Crispin Shamblee.

Étoile Season 1 remains available to stream on Prime Video.
