Stranger Things star Natalia Dyer is breaking down one of the most significant scenes between her character Nancy Wheeler and Charlie Heaton's character Jonathon Byers on the show's fifth season, as the relationship fans have been rooting for a long time finally came to an end.
The duo first met in the show's first season and their relationship has been building slowly ever since. They started dating properly in season 2 but ended up breaking up in the fifth season.
The breakup is amicable, as they realize how they have been in denial about their fading relationship and part ways lovingly, admitting their faults and that they both want different things in life. For Dyer, it's one of the most satisfying scenes of the season,
Speaking to Deadline, the actress stated,
"We really love that [breakup] scene, and we love having that scene and getting to do that scene, because a lot of the Nancy-Jonathan dynamic, you don’t get to see on screen...You get to see the weight all of this has had on them, and how much love there really is still there. They think they might be dying in that moment. So, the truth of it becomes really important. Once I read that, I felt like [it was] maybe the only way and the best way, and a really satisfying way, for this love relationship to come to a close. That was really beautiful."
More details about Nancy Wheeler and Jonathon Byers' relationship on Stranger Things

Jonathan and Nancy’s relationship on Stranger Things is built less on romance and more on shared trauma, quiet understanding, and really bad timing.
It starts with Will Byers missing and with Barb gone, they become the two people realizing the adults around them are not going to save anyone. They become a team first as they work together searching for Barb, and continue to sit together with grief when she is confirmed dead. By Christmas, the feelings are already there, wrapped up in a camera, a soft kiss on the cheek, and the kind of care that does not ask for anything back.
In the second season, things change as Jonathan takes Nancy home when she gets drunk at a party, helps her expose Hawkins Lab with Murray Bauman, and stands beside her while they burn the Mind Flayer out of Will. They also start dating this season, a relationship that continues in later seasons.
Cracks start appearing when they start dating long distance, with their conflicting college plans, Jonathon's NYU aspirations, and Nancy's denial over things going bleak. However, even after their breakup, they continue to have love for each other, making it one of the most significant friendships and relationships of the show.
Stranger Things is available to stream on Netflix.
