After multiple cancellations and surprising revivals, S.W.A.T. is set for yet another return—this time in the form of a spin-off.. A spin-off show of the police procedural drama, which recently concluded its eight-season run on CBS, has been picked up by Sony Pictures Television.

Titled S.W.A.T. Exiles, the spin-off will see the return of Shemar Moore as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson Jr., who is forced out of retirement and has to collaborate with a new team of inexperienced young officers.

It has not yet been revealed whether any of the other original cast members will return for the new show. Jason Ning, who previously worked on Lucifer and The Expanse, will be serving as the showrunner.

S.W.A.T. Exiles confirmed by Sony Pictures Television

The upcoming spin-off, titled S.W.A.T. Exiles, will consist of 10 episodes and will be distributed by Sony Pictures Television. However, it remains unclear whether the series will air on a broadcast network such as CBS or be released on a streaming platform. The official logline for the spin-off reads:

“After a high-profile mission goes sideways, [Hondo] is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits.”
“Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.”

The news comes just two days after the S.W.A.T. series finale was aired on CBS. There were demands from fans to continue the show, and the producers have given in to those by ordering a spin-off.

The series will begin production in Los Angeles this summer, with Shemar Moore reprising his role as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson Jr. The actor released a statement to express his excitement as soon as the project was announced, and said:

“My eight seasons on SWAT have been epic and memorable. We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide. I am excited for this next generation and iteration of SWAT with Sony.”
“Katherine Pope, Neal H. Moritz, Jason Ning, and I will keep the franchise, thrill ride action, heartfelt drama, and storytelling of S.W.A.T. alive. WE DON’T LOSE!!!! ROLL SWAT!!!”

The rest of the star cast of the new show remains to be announced. Meanwhile, the original series also starred Jay Harrington, Kenny Johnson, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Rochelle Aytes, Annie Ilonzeh, and Anna Enger Ritch in the main roles.

The original show began airing on CBS in 2017 and told the story of a team of Los Angeles Police Department officers. The show was canceled twice during its run, but the decision was overturned by CBS. Its third and final cancellation was announced in March 2025, and the show aired its finale on May 16, 2025.
