Sadie Sink is back for Stranger Things Season 5 s Max Mayfield, and the actress is dropping all the details about her character arc and a very close relationship she will have with Nell Fisher's Holly Wheeler. In the new season, Max Mayfield may lie unconscious in a hospital bed, but inside Vecna’s mind she’s awake, moving, and talking as if nothing happened. In Episode 4, she finally reconnects with Holly Wheeler and explains what she’s been enduring in this dream world. Max wants to lead them both out, but every attempt she’s made so far has failed.
Speaking to Variety, Sink talked about her character arc this season and how her storyline with Holly will evolve as she told the outlet,
"It’s a really interesting dynamic that we get to explore a lot this season, and I’m excited for everyone to see it. Nell Fisher is an amazing young actress, as you’ve seen so far, so I definitely learned a lot from her. And I think her and Max’s dynamic throughout the rest of the episodes just evolves, and they learn from each other. And you’ll see where that [Camazotz storyline] goes. But it was a really heartwarming storyline to be a part of this year."
More details about Max Mayfield's storyline in Stranger Things Season 5
Max Mayfield’s long-awaited return in Stranger Things Season 5 is both heartbreaking and electrifying. Although her body has remained unresponsive in a hospital bed ever since Vecna nearly killed her in Season 4, her mind has been active somewhere far more dangerous. By the time Season 5 begins, Max has been trapped inside Henry Creel’s twisted inner world for eighteen months, hidden deep within a network of caves he refuses to enter.
Holly Wheeler’s abduction is what finally pulls Max back into the story. When Holly discovers her in Episode 4, Max explains that she has been living inside Henry’s memories ever since her physical body was revived by Eleven but left without her consciousness.
Sadie Sink learned early in Season 4 that Max’s story wouldn’t end with her death. The Duffer brothers reassured her that the coma was only the beginning of a new arc. Inside Henry’s mindscape, Max has survived by navigating fragments of his past, from the ruin of the rainbow room to echoes of Hawkins High in 1959, where Joyce promotes Oklahoma in a memory tied closely to the Broadway prequel, Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Max even witnesses Henry’s old family home, which appears inviting on the surface but is steeped in darkness.
With three more episodes arriving Christmas Day and the finale landing on New Year’s Eve, the final stretch promises more revelations about Max, her letters from Season 4, and whether she’ll ever find peace outside Henry’s prison.
Stranger Things Season 5 is now streaming on Netflix.
