The critically acclaimed FX drama, Shogun, is set to arrive soon for its second season. Based on the novel by James Clavell, the show portrays a Japanese feudal lord facing political challenges when an English sailor arrives in Japan. The show has mostly Japanese characters and has more Japanese dialogue than English.
Season one was greatly appreciated, becoming the first Japanese-language series to ever win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. Shogun also created a record by being the most awarded single season of television in Emmy history by winning eighteen Primetime Emmy Awards at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards and 76th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
Thus, it is safe to say that Shogun's season two is a highly anticipated one. And in a recent update, Shogun showrunner revealed that season two is closer than one thought.
Shogun returning soon
Season one of Shogun was a global success, and fans are eagerly waiting for season two. Fans would be glad to know that season two is in pre-production and will start filming soon. As said by showrunner Justin Marks in an interview with Radio Times at the BAFTA Television Awards 2025,
"We pick up in Vancouver, prep in a couple of months – in fact, I'm going in two weeks to scout out our first locations."
He continues,
"We start shooting in January – which is not enough time to get what we need to get off the ground, so we're rushing it to screen...
"It's a lot less time to make the show this time around than we had in the first season."
While fans might consider this good news, it is a difficult situation for the creators. All shows, especially historical fiction, need their respective production time to do justice to the story. While it is exciting news that the show will be returning soon, hopefully by the end of 2026, creators are having a tough time bringing their vision to life with a limited time window.
According to Radio Times, Hiroyuki Sanada, the actor who plays Lord Yoshii Toranaga in Shogun, spoke about season two, saying,
"the writers' room is working so hard"
He also said,
"We'd love to make season two follow season one's flavour of authenticity but also... even the people who know the real history, what happened in real life, we want to make them surprised."

The cast returning for season two includes Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis. While we do not know what storylines season two will explore, we do know that it will be set ten years after the events of season one. While this gives characters to grow, it also gives us more storylines to witness and explore when season two arrives on FX.
All episodes of Shogun season one are currently streaming on FX and FX on Hulu.
