Spies, screw-ups, and yes… weaponized farts; Slow Horses is back for season 5, and this time the spotlight’s on everyone’s favorite insufferable tech bro, Roddy Ho. Director Saul Metzstein and star Christopher Chung tease a season that’s equal parts chaos, comedy, and classic Slough House dysfunction.
With Roddy somehow landing a real girlfriend, Jackson Lamb adding “biological warfare” to his skillset, and Nick Mohammed joining the party as London’s mayor in the middle of a messy re-election. If you thought Slough House couldn’t get any more unhinged, season 5 is here to prove you very, very wrong.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Metzstein talked about the new seaaon's premise and teased:
"There's murder and there's mayhem and there's terrorist activity and security problems. And of course these things affect not only the slow horses, but what happens at MI5 at the Park."
Season 5 of Slow Horses promises to dive into deeper emotions while keeping its trademark humor, with Roddy Ho taking center stage. His expanded role allows Christopher Chung to flex his comedy skills while sharing more screen time with characters like Diana Taverner, whose unexpected chemistry with Ho becomes a highlight.
Chung, thrilled to adapt London Rules, cherished the chance to work alongside Kristin Scott Thomas, whom he greatly admired. The season also introduces new faces, including Ho’s girlfriend Tara and London’s mayor Zafar Jaffrey, played by Nick Mohammed, whose re-election battle unfolds against a backdrop of political tension, murder, and mayhem.
How season 5 of Slow Horses will be a spy thriller blended with workplace comedy
Metzstein explained that season 5 of Slow Horses will blend workplace comedy and spy thriller, a combination that is a sure formula for success.
With season 6 already completed and a seventh confirmed, he suggested fans would see the signature mix of chaos and intelligence failures driving the narrative forward once again. He teased that, as ever, the mayhem stemmed from a classic “slow horse” blunder, reminding viewers that the show thrived on such missteps.
Metzstein tells the outlet about the genre the show is going for as he says:
"There's plenty of spy shows, there's plenty of workplace comedies, but somehow when you fuse these things, and I think we're getting better and better at that — there's one particular moment which will be very obvious to you when you see it. Something very extreme happens, but it still manages to be comedic, and I just love it because that's some special tone that we've hit. That to me, makes the show stand out as something a little bit special."
Adding to the season’s unique flavor, Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb would apparently unveil a bizarre new “weapon” in the form of what Metzstein described as weaponized flatulence. Unlike before, where it served merely as a gross character detail, Lamb’s gas would now be woven directly into the plot, serving as a surprisingly pivotal element that promised equal measures of humor and shock.
Slow Horses season 5 premieres on Apple TV+ on September 24, with new episodes released weekly.
