South Park fans can be hopeful for a renewal of the popular animated show for a twenty-eighth season now. On July 21, 2025, the Los Angeles Times published a report stating that Matt Stone and Trey Parker may make approximately 1.5 billion dollars through a five-year deal with Paramount+. This deal arrives just 48 hours before the twenty-seventh season, which is scheduled to air on July 23, 2025.

This development is surprising because last month, the creators of the series and Paramount were in a stand-off. Last month, Parker and Stone, who are also the creators of South Park, accused Jeff Shell, the incoming president of Paramount, of interfering in their contract negotiations with potential streaming platforms. It must be noted that last month, Paramount's licensing deal with the creators was expiring.

Now, it seems that everything is fine between the creators and the studio for the next five years.

This new deal comes in a contentious battle between the South Park creators and the studio:

As mentioned before, the creators and Paramount were in a bit of tussle a month ago as Paramount Studios was also going through a potential merger. As Paramount's licensing deal to stream South Park was expiring, Matt Stone and Trey Parker were shopping streaming rights with several streaming platforms.

However, Stone and Parker accused Jeff Shell, who is poised to be the president of Paramount after the Skydance merger, of interfering with their negotiations. A strongly worded June 21, 2025 letter that read:

“We hereby demand that you, Redbird, and Skydance immediately cease your interference. If these activities continue, we will have no choice but to act to both protect our rights and discharge any obligations we may have to the public.”

Furthermore, a July 14, 2025, report in The Hollywood Reporter also revealed that Stone and Parker had drawn a deal with Paramount Global that would've secured South Park for the next decade at Paramount. This deal, valued at approximately 3 billion, was balked at by Skydance, which currently owns Paramount. Apart from that, this merger also affected the scheduled programming of season 27.

The delay further drove a wedge:

The twenty-seventh season was initially supposed to air on July 9, 2025. But on July 2, 2025, Comedy Central shockingly announced that the release date for season 27 was pushed to July 23, 2025. A frustrated Stone and Parker released this statement in response through all official pages of the animated series:

‘This merger is a s**t show and it’s f***ing up ‘South Park. We are at the studio working on new episodes and we hope the fans get to see them somehow.”

As the twenty-seventh season gears up for its release, fans are hopeful that they get more of the animated series over the next five years.

South Park Season 27 airs on Comedy Central on July 23, 2025.
