With the fifth and final season of Stranger Things days away, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer are debunking a major theory fans had about the show's first season. One of the significant plot points of the debut run of the show was Noah Schnapp's Will getting kidnapped by a demogorgon, and seasons later when Vecna was introduced, fans started theorizing that it was him who was actually behind the kidnapping.
A seemingly popular theory among fans, it is, however untrue, as the Duffer brothers have revealed now. During the show's first season, Vecna's character was not even built yet, and it's an unlikely Easter Egg, as the creators have revealed. Speaking to Digital Spy UK about the theory, Ross said,
“Will’s biking and he sees a silhouetted figure in the road. I’ve seen people claim that that’s Vecna or that we went back and changed it. But that, I swear, was the demogorgon. Back in Season 1, we obviously hadn’t designed Vecna or anything. We knew that there was a more sentient evil behind everything in the Upside Down, but obviously this is long before Vecna had been designed.”
Matt added that it “would’ve been cool if we had done it”, but it's a false theory. Vecna will next make an appearance in the show's fifth season, and from everything we have been teased with so far, the final season has quite an adventure in store for fans. Here's everything you need to know about Stranger Things season 5.
Stranger Things Season 5: Everything you need to know
The final return to Hawkins is almost here, and Netflix is rolling out Stranger Things 5 like a full seasonal event. The last season of the science fiction horror drama series arrives in eight episodes, released in three parts on November 26, December 25, and finally December 31, 2025.
The story drops you into the fall of 1987, right after the chaos of Season Four. Hawkins is fractured after the Rifts open, and the group makes it their mission to track down Vecna and finish what they started. The trouble is that he has vanished entirely. Meanwhile, the military arrives, locks down the town under quarantine, and renews its hunt for Eleven, forcing her into hiding once again. As the anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance creeps closer, a familiar dread settles back over everyone. A final, terrifying showdown is approaching, and it is stronger than anything they have faced before. Ending this nightmare will require every member of the party standing together.
With behind the scenes photos already showing the cast reunited, fans know this last adventure will be emotional, intense, and unforgettable. It is the full party, standing together one final time, ready to close the chapter that began it all.
The previous seasons of Stranger Things are available to stream on Netflix.
