A brand new poster for Max Mayfield has been shared by Stranger Things online, teasing the character's deeper involvement in the show's second volume after her little appearances in the first volume. The post includes an image of Sadie Sink as Max, staring into the camera, with the caption "Hi," which can indicate Max's inclusion in the later episodes that will drop soon.

The poster also reads "One last adventure" which teases the larger danger ahead of the characters in the second volume, considering the big cliffhanger at the end of the first volume.

Sadie Sink spoke to Variety about her character's storyline this season, after Max went into coma. Answering a question on whether she was nervous about Max's fate, Sink stated,

"Not nervous, but just curious what they were going to do with Max, given how we left things off with her in Season 4. But I knew that if they were keeping her around, it was for a reason. They would have just killed her off if she was useless. So I knew something was in store for her. I really liked seeing her in that environment, which is just so foreign from everything we’ve seen her in before. "

Max Mayfield is technically still in a hospital bed, but Stranger Things season 5 makes it clear she’s far from silent. Inside Vecna’s mind, she’s walking, arguing, strategising, and living in a strange 1950s Hawkins that’s been her prison for more than a year. It’s a surreal existence, but it’s the only place she’s awake.

Her big return happens in episode 4, when she finally crosses paths with Holly Wheeler, played by Nell Fisher. Holly’s been dragged into Vecna’s mental maze too, and Max wastes no time explaining what’s really going on. She’s been trapped in this dreamlike pocket of Vecna’s consciousness since the season 4 finale, fighting to escape, failing repeatedly, and holding onto the hope that there’s still a way out.

Outside of Vecna’s mind, Lucas is still camped out at Max’s bedside, refusing to give up on her. Caleb McLaughlin’s character keeps looping Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill, hoping the song that once reached her might pull her back again. It hasn’t worked yet, but he doesn’t stop.

Max and Holly will share a lot more time together this season, and Sink has spoken up about the duo's dynamic, and how it would be a crucial part of the season. Three more episodes for Stranger Things arrive on Christmas Day as the second volume, with the series finale dropping New Year’s Eve.

The first volume of Stranger Things Season 5 is available to stream on Netflix.
