One of the most special relationships in 9-1-1 is between Evan "Buck" Buckley, played by Oliver Stark, and Edmundo "Eddie" Díaz, played by Ryan Guzman. The two have grown to be best friends and stand by each other through thick and thin.

However, a section of the audience wants them to be more than just friends. Considering that Buck is bis*xual and there is intense chemistry between him and Eddie, fans want them to become a couple in 9-1-1, even though Eddie has been depicted as a straight guy.

Oliver Stark has now finally addressed the fans’ demands. During an appearance on Good Morning America, the actor said he is aware that people want Buck and Eddie to end up together and added that the audience can interpret their relationship in any way they want:

"Listen, we’re all for people to watch it and take out of it what they want and put into it what they want. So, we shall see what happens. I always like to say: ‘I just work here.’"

Oliver Stark reiterated that Buck and Eddie are best friends, and the latter is a straight character. However, he added that viewers can still have different interpretations of their relationship, and he is okay with it:

"Fans have become super invested in these characters, in this relationship. You know, they’re best friends, Eddie is a straight character on the show, but I think that’s the point in doing what we do is for people to interpret and take out of it whatever they want, and people have been pushing for that for a long time."

Buck, a firefighter, has been a part of 9-1-1 since the first season, while Eddie was introduced as a firefighter and paramedic in the second season. The two did not get along at first as Buck felt jealous and unsure about Eddie joining the 118 team.

However, the two began to trust each other after facing a dangerous rescue together. From then on, they worked well as partners and supported each other in their personal lives, too. Buck helped Eddie find care for his son, Christopher, and opened up to him about his sexuality and struggles.

Their bond became so strong that Buck started seeing Eddie as his best friend. Even when a lawsuit put them on opposite sides, they managed to talk it out and make up. Buck also stayed by Eddie’s side when he had to go to therapy and helped him feel better. Their camaraderie and dependency on each other made the audience ship them together.

9-1-1 is available to stream on Hulu.
