HBO Max's The Pitt joined the growing collection of medical dramas on television, and immediately became a crowd favorite for it's accurate depictions of medical journeys, receiving seals of aprrovals from the medical community. Led by Noah Wyle, who plays Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, a senior physician, the show revolves around the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center's single 15-hour work shifts, depicting the lives of healthcare workers as they grapple with personal and professional issues.

Wyle, who is also known for his role in the medical drama ER, took home two Emmy awards for his work on The Pitt, and in a recent interview, the actor talked about how his character's journey took form on the show and he was all in on the details.

Speaking to TV Line, the actor said,

“Well, in terms of the emotional journey he goes on, I knew quite a bit. That was all fleshed out and planned in advance. But the details of who he is and what makes him tick are sparse by design. Most practitioners don’t wear their hearts or educations or personal problems on their sleeve, and guys like Robbie, who’ve lived very compartmentalized lives out of survival instinct, let you in even less. But this is not his normal day or normal shift. Over the course of the shift, you watch that professional mask and demeanor erode until he’s no longer able to keep those compartments airtight.”

The Pitt, created by R. Scott Gemmill with John Wells, and Noah Wyle backing him in the executive producer seats, the series marks the trio’s reunion after their ER glory days. It arrived as a medical procedural, but it carries a raw, almost documentary-like edge that makes you forget you’re watching scripted television. Noah Wyle leads the cast with Tracy Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, and Shabana Azeez rounding out the ensemble, each bringing their own spark to a story built on constant pressure and medical accuracy.

The medical community praised the show, noting how the series nails the daily grind of healthcare workers in a post pandemic world. Critics and fans have joined in as well, with many calling it one of the best medical dramas on television. The first season racked up thirteen nominations at the seventy seventh Primetime Emmy Awards and walked away with five wins including Outstanding Drama Series, Casting, and acting trophies for Wyle, LaNasa, and guest performer Shawn Hatosy.

As of now, Max renewed The Pitt in February 2025, and season two is set to land on January 8, 2026. The first season of the show is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
