Netflix has canceled Kevin Williamson's crime drama series The Waterfront, just two months after its Season 1 premiere on June 19.

The cancelation news is certainly surprising, as the show managed to create a lot of buzz on social media, even spending five weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 for English-language series and amassing 11.6M views in its first week. It was only overthrown from its No. 1 spot by the highly anticipated final season of Squid Game.

Set in Havenport, North Carolina, The Waterfront follows the dysfunctional Buckleys, a fishing family that starts to crumble after their patriarch, Harlan Buckley's two heart attacks. This dire situation, to keep their business and family afloat, forces them to resort to illicit activities and make some dangerous deals.

The crime series stars Holt McCallany as the patriarch Harlan Buckley, Melissa Benoist as Harlan's daughter Bree, Jake Weary as Harlan's son Cane, and Maria Bello as Harlan's wife Belle in the main roles.

In a surprising turn of events, Netflix has decided not to continue with its popular crime drama series The Waterfront. The news is even more shocking as the streamer earlier renewed another of its freshman drama series, Ransom Canyon, which spent four weeks in its Global Top 10 charts and garnered 9.4M views in its first week of release, as compared to Williamson's series' 11.6M.

The showrunner and cast were certainly interested in exploring the dysfunctional tale of the Buckley family beyond Season 1, and Williamson had also shared his ideas about Season 2. While Season 1 saw the family fighting against outside forces, Season 2 would likely have featured a civil war within the family, between Harlan and Belle.

In an interview with Netflix Tudum, Williamson shared his plans for The Waterfront Season 2 as:

"This season was about Harlan and Cane — how they reconciled their differences and how they’re going to move forward. Now Belle is a little more front and centre. She’s not living in the shadows.”

The season 1 finale saw Belle making a deal with the enemies (Parkers), who were likely behind Harlan's father's execution. Season 2 would have likely explored Harlan's efforts to investigate the events behind his father's death while navigating his wife's betrayal. Season 2 was supposedly Belle's time to shine (which will now not be materialized).

The Waterfront Season 1 is streaming on Netflix.
