Mark Cuban talks about the importance of youth gaining experience
In one of his recent conversations, Mark Cuban threw light on the importance of getting jobs early in life and how even a job at a restaurant can make a difference in a youth's experience and skills.
The Shark Tank investor first talked about how he started working at the age of 12 and how it impacts today's selection process and job market.
"I think the root of it is, schools are a lot more competitive to get into now, and because it's so much easier to apply once it went digital, it was over. You know, once you fill up one app and you go send it to 200 colleges or whatever, the colleges couldn't deal with it personally, you know."
He continued,
"They had to use AI, or they had to use, you know, filtering, whatever it is, to try to figure out, so you had to stand out in unique ways, and that changed the game completely versus when I was... it was a handwritten application; you sent it in, somebody read it, they responded to you, and having a job was just had a different emphasis."
He further talks about how having a job now does not help anybody stand out in a job application, however stated,
"If the schools switched that around and all they had to do was announce we want work experience, it would change like that."
When asked about what kind of jobs he recommends, the Shark Tank OG investor replied,
"Any job, it doesn't even matter. Any job at all, because you learn, like you said, how to deal with people, you learn how to work for a boss, you learn how to show up on time, and you learn how to take responsibility for all. Even if it's a retail store, you know, or at a retail store, learning how to sell and interact with people, there's no bad job, you know."
Mark Cuban also stated that,
"Every job is going to teach you something. It's going to get you to at least a certain level of understanding of business, and I've always said that no matter what job you get, whether it's you know, whether you're in high school or even after college, just get any job and just figure out how to be good at it."
Cuban wrapped up the discussion by emphasizing the importance of giving your all in any kind of work.
