Toby Wallace is officially the first series regular to be cast in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Assassin’s Creed.

Netflix and Ubisoft are working together to turn the video game into a multi-episode drama. The Australian-British actor is best known for Euphoria, Babyteeth, and The Bikeriders.

Netflix has been working on the Assassin’s Creed series for several years. The streaming giant approved the live-action show earlier this year. The showrunners are Roberto Patino (Westworld) and David Wiener (Halo). They are also the creators and executive producers.

The series will explore the game’s main conflict. It is a secret war between groups that support control or free will. The story will cover many historical periods.

Netflix’s announcement on Tudum reads:

“Toby Wallace (Euphoria Season 3, The Bikeriders, Babyteeth), known to Netflix viewers for his breakout role as Campbell Eliot in The Society, is the first performer welcomed into the new series. Details about his character remain tightly under oath — this is Assassin’s Creed, after all — but Wallace will enter a world teeming with covert alliances, hidden agendas, and centuries of conflict.”

The 28-year-old actor has acted in both movies and TV shows. He became known for the Australian film Babyteeth. He also impressed viewers in Jeff Nichols’s The Bikeriders.

Wallace will be a regular on Season 3 of HBO’s Euphoria. This makes him more visible to audiences around the world. Netflix likely chose him as the first regular because of his growing profile.

Right now, many production details are unknown. Netflix has not said when filming will start. They also haven’t announced a release date. No other cast members have been revealed besides Wallace.

The historical periods the show will cover are also unknown since Assassin’s Creed games take place in many different times, from ancient civilizations to Renaissance Italy.

Furthermore, Netflix has not said who Toby Wallace will play. The announcements only say he “joins the cast.” Whether he will play a character from the games, like Desmond or Ezio, or a new character made just for the show, is all under wraps.

The live-action series is part of a big deal between Netflix and Ubisoft. The deal was announced in 2020. It covers live-action, animated, and other Assassin’s Creed content.

The Assassin’s Creed games have sold over 230 million copies. This shows why Netflix is making a big bet on the show.

In an earlier joint statement, Patino and Wiener said:

“Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story — about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith. It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance.”

They added:

“But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time. And it’s about what we stand to lose as a species, when those connections break. We’ve got an amazing team behind us with the folks at Ubisoft and our champions at Netflix, and we’re committed to creating something undeniable for fans all over the planet.”

Assassin’s Creed has been adapted before. In 2016, a live-action movie starred Michael Fassbender.

Ubisoft also made shorter films. Assassin’s Creed: Lineage has three short live-action films. They came out in 2009 as a prequel to Assassin’s Creed II. They focus on Ezio Auditore’s father, Giovanni.

Assassin’s Creed: Ascendance is an animated short. It bridges the story between Assassin’s Creed II and Brotherhood.

Assassin’s Creed: Embers is a 21-minute animated short from 2011. It is an epilogue to Ezio Auditore’s story. It shows an older Ezio living in retirement.

There have been movies, short films, and comics. But Netflix’s show will be the first full-length live-action TV series. It will tell the story in multiple episodes.
