And Just Like That…showrunner Michael Patrick King is giving fans all the details about the show's third season finale and how it concludes Carrie Bradshaw's arc. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, King opened up on how he decided to end things with a message of strength for the character, even as she's in solitude.
King said that the whole journey of And Just Like That… was designed around the question of what it would feel like if no one showed up, and the season was all about bringing Carrie to that emotional space.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, King stated,
"We wanted to show it’s a possibility that Carrie could get to that place, and the entire season was about getting her to that feeling. In particular, this last episode was about creating so much chaos and so much love and so much family around her that you would feel that she was not alone. "
He then adds,
"But when she walks into that beautiful house — quiet — and eats pumpkin pie with a spoon, you realize, “Oh, that’s pretty good life, too. That’s a pretty good life.”"
How the finale of And Just Like That… made a point to celebrate Carrie
Michael Patrick King also noted that the finale aimed to surround her with chaos, love, and family so that viewers would feel she wasn’t truly alone. Yet, in the quiet of that beautiful house, watching Carrie savor pumpkin pie with a spoon, he suggested that it became clear she had found another kind of joy, a simple, unexpectedly perfect life. King quips,
"Look, you start every season thinking: “We’re just going to do it out full. We’re going to let the stories come. We’re not going to hold back.” But when I was writing the last line: “The Woman realized she wasn’t alone. She was on her own.” [Co-writer] Susan Fales-Hill and I wrote it and were like, “That’s it.” "
