Actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry shared a moving speech at the BET Awards 2025. His speech came before Ledisi’s performance, where he said that his son remarked that he was following in his father's footsteps. Perry then told his son that they should walk together instead.
As they walked till the end, his son turned around and saw the footprints he had made himself. Tyler Perry then addressed his audience, explaining that he shared this story because he wanted to discuss a current situation in the country. He said:
“They are removing our books from libraries, they are removing our stories and our history, they are removing our names from government buildings. It’s as if someone wants to erase our footprints.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, his speech was targeted at Hollywood studios. Perry further explained that it was impossible to erase footprints as their ancestors were taken from their homeland. They came to America through the ocean.
Tyler Perry then declared that it was not the time for silence or surrender. Instead, he urged them to persevere and continue making an impact wherever they went. He said:
“I can tell you this, I have made more Black billionaires, hear me when I say this, than any studio in this city combined. Because I’m making footprints. So I don’t care if you’re struggling, if you’re trying to make it, you’re trying to build a business, if you have a dream, keep making footprints. Don’t let anybody stop you, you can do it.”
Tyler Perry said the song Ledisi would perform was a homage to black women
Tyler Perry expressed his gratitude to his audience, emphasizing his appreciation for Black women, stating that they had consistently supported him in ways that were hard to describe. While introducing Ledisi and her performance, he said:
“The first weapon I ever held was my mother's hand and how black women has held us down. I wanted to be here today to introduce this next song because when I heard it, it's an homage to every black woman and every strong black woman, every black woman who's vulnerable, every black woman who's weak, every black woman who's powerful.”
Tyler Perry recently shared an Instagram story, acknowledging that his films concentrate on the experiences of Black women. He explained that if he had an opportunity to show Black women on screen experiencing love, happiness, joy, pain, or struggle, he was providing a service to everyone.
Tyler Perry had previously said that in society, many women, particularly Black women, were generally earning more money than Black men. He then suggested that if a woman could find love with a good man, regardless of his profession or income, it was acceptable.
He emphasized that if this man was kind, respected her, and took care of their home and marriage, his financial contribution might not be the same as hers, and that was perfectly fine. He added that such a man was not beneath her, but rather someone who loved her for her true value.
