HBO's Harry Potter show is chugging towards the production start date this Summer. Thus, everyone involved in the series is in preparation mode for the HBO series. It is worth noting that the main trio and Hogwarts professors have been cast as of now. One of these confirmed cast members is British actor Nick Frost, who will play the role of Hogwarts gamekeeper and groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid.
Frost was recently interviewed by Ash Crossan from ScreenRant while promoting the upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon. In that interview, Crossan asked Frost about HBO's rendition of Harry Potter, which is set to begin filming soon. Nick Frost's answer not only touched upon the character he is playing, but also confirmed he has seen a few sets.
What did Nick Frost say about the Harry Potter series?
As mentioned before, the Rubeus Hagrid actor sat down for an interview with ScreenRant in which Nick Frost spoke about his role as Hagrid in the upcoming Harry Potter show, which is set to adapt the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
Frost explained how he sees the character of Hagrid as more of a protector of the main trio. Here's what Nick Frost said:
"Yes. Look, I'm a dad myself, so I am going to be very protective to the children, and I think that is Hagrid's — one of the kind of baselines of his relationship with those children. He's very protective of them, and I honestly can't wait."
After expressing that he plans to be just as protective of Dominic McLaughlin (Harry), Arabella Stanton (Hermione), and Alastair Stout (Ron), Frost went on to reveal that he has visited some of the Harry Potter sets, and that the crew working on the series are currently creating the thick bushy Hagrid beard. Nick Frost's exact words were:
"I've had the opportunity to go and see some sets, and they're growing a Hagrid beard, and I'm seeing the Sorting Hat, and here are some wands. It's absolutely amazing. Getting the chance to start to learn Francesca's script and hanging out with [director] Mark Mylod — that's the reason I wanted to do it in the first place — to get to retell and to be Hagrid. I get a chance to be Hagrid. It is amazing."
Frost was officially confirmed as Hagrid in the HBO series on April 14, 2025, and his casting was one of the choices that fans unanimously supported. Nevertheless, Nick Frost has a large shoes to fill as we all still remember Robbie Coltrane's iconic performance as Hagrid in the eight Harry Potter movies that were released between 2001 and 2011. This is a fact that even Frost acknowledges.
Nick Frost vows not to copy Robbie Coltrane's performance:
The ScreenRant interview is not the only interview that Nick Frost gave in the promotional tour of How to Train Your Dragon. The same day, he was interviewed by Collider's Editor-in-Chief, Steve Weintraub, in which the actor addressed the daunting task of filling up Robbie Coltrane's shoes and promised to do his own thing:
“You get cast because you're going to bring something to that. While I'm really aware of what went before me in terms of Robbie [Coltrane]'s amazing performance, I'm never going to try and be Robbie. I'm going to try and do something, not ‘different,’ I think you have to be respectful to the subject matter, but within that, there's scope for minutia. I always read Hagrid as he's like a lovely, lost, violent, funny, warm child. I think the beauty of being able to do a book a season means I get to explore that a lot more, and I can't wait. He's funny! I want it to be funny and cheeky and scared and protective and childlike. That's what I'm planning on doing.”
Then, the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew actor revealed the shocking filming schedule he might be following for the HBO series. After saying, "Ten or eleven months a season", Frost said:
“I'm just so excited to get going. I've gone in to do head sculpts and have your hand stand and stuff, and they say, ‘Oh, have a look at this.’ And you're like, ‘Wow. That's the coolest thing.’ I love films. I’ve loved cinema my whole life, so to be part of that universe now and that they're showing me, like, a dancing mushroom, it's like, ‘That is so cool!’”
As of now, production hasn't begun for HBO's Harry Potter series; therefore, it does not have a release date yet. However, it is expected to be released somewhere in 2027, but even that's unconfirmed for now.
