Pluribus, the newest psychological thriller, is helmed by the very talented Vince Gilligan. Besides the fresh storyline, this series also comes with a distinct feature, which can be seen in the disclaimer of the series. The disclaimer mentions that the series is “made by humans”. In recent years, with the arrival of AI, the world, especially the world of creativity, is taking quite a distinct turn.

Though the use of AI is usually to benefit human beings, it is slowly taking away the creative spark that people have. Students often use AI to write their essays and do their schoolwork, which takes away from their critical thinking abilities, causing harm rather than any benefit.

Even in many TV shows and movies, AI is now getting quite prevalent. However, Vince Gilligan sternly admits his aversion to the use of AI. In a recent interview with Deadline, he opens up about his thoughts on AI.

Vince Gilligan’s thoughts on AI and Guillermo del Toro

Though Vince Gilligan does “not care for AI”, he definitely thinks that the “central impetus behind any new technology that the human beings create is for the betterment of society. However, his ideas about AI are not the same. According to him, this technology is “being designed” to take “creativity away”. As a creative person himself, with multiple projects under his belt, creativity is a crucial factor for him.

Hence, taking away the “creative endeavor” from people is definitely not something that Vince Gilligan supports. He did not use ChatGPT because “no one has held a shotgun” to his head and made him do it.

He continues that AI will do more than just rob the creativity from people. He thinks using AI for creative purposes is “giving up a part of yourself.” His words definitely bring out the depth of the damage that this new technology can do to the world.

He also brings in a connection from his series, Pluribus, indicating that people using AI for creative purposes are losing “agency”. He is definitely trying to become “open-minded” about AI, but he does not see the “benefit”. Rather, he only sees the “detriment” as now “no one knows how to construct a sentence anymore. For Vince Gilligan, the narrative that the tech companies are setting is that this technology does not possess any “consciousness” is “a hell of a parlor trick”.

Guillermo del Toro also shares similar thoughts about AI as Vince Gilligan. In a recent interview, Guillermo del Toro also pointed out that he would “rather die” than use this new technology when he was asked about his opinion on AI. Gilligan, while speaking about del Toro, admits that he is a “genius”. For Gilligan, Guillermo del Toro is “an international treasure”. It cannot be denied that the creative prowess that Guillermo del Toro encompasses is rare to see in the world of entertainment.

Guillermo del Toro recently helmed the science fiction movie Frankenstein and voiced his disinterest in generative AI. He thinks people should “consider where we’re going” with technology.

In a world where there is a distinct inclination towards the usage of AI for creative purposes, creative minds such as Guillermo del Toro and Vince Gilligan maintain a stance that completely dismisses AI. It can also be seen in their works as well. The manner in which Pluribus handles the storyline with such distinct authenticity is truly an indication of the capabilities of the human mind.
