The arrival of the fall season calls for the rewatching of Gilmore Girls once again. This year, however, the rewatching comes with a level of speciality as the series turns 25. 25 years ago, the story of Lorelai and Rory changed the lives of many viewers.

Some found peace, some resonated, but most of all people enjoyed every bit of it. To think that this script of this series was looked down upon truly sounds unbelievable. However, that is the truth. It is truly a surprise that Amy Sherman-Palladino did not have any supporters when she started off with the script. “Nobody believed me”, those are her words while she speaks about the challenges she faced with the script. However, now, Gilmore Girls is a series that has not only transcended the test of time but also become a representation of a whole season.

There are so many factors that come into play when a series becomes a phenomenon like Gilmore Girls. Amongst these factors, the script plays a vital role. It becomes a deciding factor whether a series is going to make it in the long run. The script is also the turning point for Gilmore Girls. If Amy Sherman-Palladino did not follow her heart, we would have never gotten this masterpiece.

While speaking about the experience that she went through while brainstorming about Lorelai and Rory’s story, she speaks about her journey to Connecticut. There she stayed at a quaint inn named the Mayflower Inn. The ambience of the locality led her to have a dramatic experience. She went through an emotional moment, which eventually gave her further inspiration for the show.

Amy Sherman-Palladino also points out that the script of the show was nothing the WB expected. It was “not soapy” enough for them. The series contains many pop culture references. These are a crucial factor that makes Gilmore Girls such a unique show. However, Amy Sherman-Palladino adds that at the time the series was given to WB, they did not understand these references. It also created a hindrance in her path.

The fast-talking duo of mother and daughter was not something that was prevalent amongst the TV shows of that time. Lorelai and Rory bantered constantly. It is nothing short of a verbal marathon. The Network was worried whether this would work in the long run or not. However, in the end, the very aspects that the network was worried about became the defining factors of success of the show.

Back at that time, when Amy Sherman-Palladino came up with the idea of the series, the pace of storytelling in TV shows was quite different. Back then, TV shows followed a slow pace. It was a deliberate step. However, it was not what the creator had in mind for Gilmore Girls. The fast-paced storyline of the series might have become a hindrance for the creator back then, but it changed the scenario of the series completely after it was released.

Amy Sherman-Palladino also speaks about the constant panic that she went through while the filming of Gilmore Girls was going on. Despite the “little time and so little money”, they worked hard towards making the show, and eventually, they were able to achieve success.

She also speaks about the difficulty during filming. Oftentimes, they could not reshoot a scene if things went wrong. However, she knew how to maintain her vision. The dialogue becomes a representation of the sharp minds of the characters, which drew the viewers in. The success of the show became proof that her unconventional script was just perfect the way it was.
