Amazon MGM Studios shared an exclusive clip from their recently released psychological thriller television series The Girlfriend, based on Michelle Frances's eponymous novel.

The thriller series is an Oedipal drama that begins to unravel when an overprotective mother, Laura (Robin Wright), starts to question her son Danny's (Laurie Davidson) new girlfriend, Cherry's (Olivia Cooke) intentions.

The recently released clip features a heartwarming conversation between Cherry and Danny, which feels that The Girlfriend is a heartfelt story about romance and love. However, the intricate details about Cherry's upbringing and how she was motivated by her father's death hint at the upcoming drama.

As Cherry playfully remembers her being a 'Daddy's girl', she reveals how her father's death drove her in life:

''It motivated me. I'm under no illusions...Nobody's gonna do it for you.''

This sets forth a volatile relationship among the three characters, which explores themes of greed, power, and Laura's overbearing love for her son, Danny.

More on The Girlfriend in our story.

The Girlfriend: Why does Laura believe that Cherry is a threat to her son?

The exclusive clip from The Girlfriend shows that Cherry and Danny met by chance, and their mutual attraction quickly turned into a relationship. While Laura is initially open to her son bringing a new woman into his life, she eventually becomes suspicious of Cherry's intentions and believes that she has entered Danny's life with ulterior motives. Cherry, who initially dismisses Laura's threats as love for her son, starts to exhibit suspicious behaviour, which clearly shows that the woman is hiding something.

The Girlfriend will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout, as the series will engross you within the toxic, unbearable, and volatile relationships between Laura, Cherry, and Danny. Partly, Laura's disdain for Cherry stems from the fact that she grew up in a poor household, unlike Danny's generational wealth. As is evident in their first meeting, Cherry believes in working hard, and she has worked hard throughout her life and successfully climbed the social ladder at her real estate firm, even when wealthy kids posed a threat to her position with their money and social connections.

However, Cherry still harbours many secrets, which makes Laura skeptical of her, as Cooke explained to TV Insider:

“She has a huge defense mechanism and her walls are up because A, she’s omitting truths about her upbringing and herself, but also because the truths that she’s omitting are the reason people have turned their backs on her before.''

The Girlfriend: Intuition vs motherly love

While Laura is genuinely intuitive and senses greed in Cherry, it is dismissed as jealousy and insecurity for her son. Everyone in Laura's life, from her husband to her best friend, and her daughter, believes that the woman has gone 'neurotic' with Cherry's arrival, as her youth and beauty pose a threat to Laura's motherly love, and she fears that she will be replaced by her son's could-be wife. In addition, Laura lost her first child when he was young, which made her even more overprotective towards Danny, and everyone sees her suspicions towards Cherry as fear and insecurity.

However, Laura is a highly intuitive woman who senses trouble in Cherry, and The Girlfriend explores this consuming drama between the two women. Wright explained her character's motivations as:

“I don’t even think that’s a question in her head about being replaced. It’s just she doesn’t want this woman in her son’s life because she senses that she’s up to no good, that she tells white lies all the time. Why does she tell white lies? Why can’t she just be herself? And we find out why she can’t just be herself.”

While both Cherry and Laura have their reasons to believe their versions of the story, the truth is always one. The main question remains: which woman will win this family feud?
