While appearing on Josh Horowitz Clips before the release of Stranger Things season 5, earlier this year, Maya Hawke expressed her view on what she thinks she would have known beforehand about her character before shooting Stranger Things.
"Nothing had prepared me for working on a character that didn't have an end."
Maya Hawke plays Robin Buckley in Stranger Things, who appeared in the initial seasons and continues into later seasons, evolving her role from a side character to a more central one in the narrative.

Here is what Maya Hawke said about her character in Stranger Things
Robin is portrayed as an employee at Scoops Ahoy, the ice-cream shop in the Starcourt Mall. While working alongside Steve Harrington, her character quickly becomes part of the core group when she helps decode a mysterious Russian message, contributing to uncovering deeper threats connected to the Upside Down in season 3 of Stranger Things. Her big moment comes when she comes out as gay to Steve, while she becomes one of the main characters by season 4, fighting against the supernatural force.
Before the release of season 5, Maya Hawke appeared for a talk with Josh Horowitz and answered questions about what she feels she would have known earlier, before she started shooting Stranger Things.
Maya Hawke emphasised that she had always seen characters who have an end. This helped her to follow their arc properly, but with Robin, this wasn't the case.
"You know in Little Women that I did for BBC, whihc is a three-episode arc or any sort of film, you can track your character from beginning, middle to end. Where do I start? Where do I have to end up? What has to happen to me to get me from this beginning person to the end person, to be on this journey? And I wish I could have talked to myself about learning that it can't be about that."
She further added that she understood and was able to make peace with the idea of working honestly and performing to create something magical while embracing the uncertainty of it, just like life.
"It has to be putting your boots on every day and trying to make something magical happen that's worth watching. Go blindly into the unknown, a little bit like life, of not knowing where your character is going to end up and just trying to pursue it with love and openness."
She further acknowledged how, if she had known this earlier, it would have saved a lot of her time during the shoot of season 1.
"I wasted a lot of time in season 1 being like, 'How am I going to do this scene if I don't understand what's going to happen in the next episode, and I just am totally confused about and you have to explain it to me. So I would have saved a lot of time if I had understood that better."
This shows how much Hawke reflects on her character and the process of bringing it to life.
