Doctor Who fans experienced the shock of their lives at the end of the Season 15 finale when the 15th Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, regenerated, paving the way for Billie Piper to become the 16th Doctor.
While regenerations aren’t new in the sci-fi series, nobody expected Ncuti Gatwa to leave the show so soon after just two seasons. The actor has now spoken out about his surprise departure from Doctor Who. In an official statement posted by the BBC, Ncuti said that while he knew he would eventually have to pass the role to someone else, he still wasn’t prepared for it:
“You know when you get cast, at some point you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. This journey has been one that I will never forget, and a role that will be part of me forever.”

Ncuti Gatwa further expressed his gratitude for being accepted into the iconic role of The Doctor, which has existed for over six decades. He also thanked fans for their support throughout his journey in Doctor Who:
“There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe.”
“The fans are truly the final character and beating heart of this show and I can’t thank the Whoniverse, and the Whovians, enough for welcoming me in, and making this such a touching experience.”
Ncuti concluded by saying that although he will miss playing The Doctor, it is time for him to say goodbye to the character and allow someone else to carry on the legacy forward:
“I’ve loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have. I’ll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor.”
Ncuti Gatwa made history by becoming the first Black and openly queer actor to be cast as the Time Lord in May 2022. The actor officially debuted in the role during the 2023 Christmas Special, The Church on Ruby Road, and went on to lead the show through Seasons 14 and 15.
However, in the Doctor Who Season 15 finale, The Doctor unexpectedly regenerated, and Billie Piper replaced Ncuti Gatwa as the Time Lord. Piper has previously appeared in the show as Rose Tyler, The Doctor's companion. Doctor Who Season 16 has not yet been officially greenlit by the BBC or Disney+, and it remains to be seen if Ncuti Gatwa will make any further appearances in the show.
