Prime Video recently canceled Derek Haas' crime thriller Countdown after Season 1, and though the sudden move has not left fans much surprised (owing to the dismal reviews), it leaves a major mystery unresolved. With a unique way of storytelling, the Jensen Ackles show introduced a new plot mid-season, leading to a reunion of Nathan Blythe's (portrayed by Eric Dane) task force of misfit officials.

This time, the target was an unknown killer who eventually turns out to be a potential threat to not only the Governor of California but also the POTUS. The credit goes to young Secret Service Agent Fitz, whose "Muzzle Pile" investigation brought a high-profile case to the limelight. However, Countdown Season 1 could not give complete creative closure as to what exactly was the motive of the killer - was it only personal or much more? Let's find out.

Countdown's cancelation after Season 1 leaves a major plot loophole about the killer's motive

While the disappointing ratings received by Countdown after the first season meant obvious bad news, the sudden cancelation of the Prime Video thriller has left a lot of things unattended -DEA Agent Amber Oliveras' fate being one of them. However, speaking of the antagonist, are we really sure about what exactly Todd the killer wants? Why is he on a ruthless hunting spree to take down the government?

As seen in the Countdown Season 1 finale, Todd framed his close friend in the FBI, Seth Lewis, in connection with every blow he has struck on the government. We also learn that this man is the same person who had been having an affair with Todd's wife for a long time.

The killer even misled Mark Meachum and his team, as every clue he left behind at a scene of crime eventually led to the same name at the end - Seth Lewis. It is clear that Todd holds some big grudge against the government, but the exact source still remains unclear.

Seth was the face that the killer used to carry out all his terror strikes (from killing government officials and common men to blowing up vehicles), and it was a pure game of revenge. But why did Todd actually go into this lone wolf lifestyle before turning into a full-fledged killer?

What exactly happened that a murderer evolved right inside the FBI? Yes, so far, it is also clear that he either worked for the bureau or had very strong ties within the department. There might be a chance that he was dropped from work because of his ruthless approach, but Countdown Season 1 has nowhere addressed the possibility.

It has been made clear through flashbacks that he was away from his job for a long time and was struggling to get back on his feet. But the causal incident has not been narrated in the first season. So, that leaves a major mystery about the killer's true origin unsolved, and the fact that this much chaos cannot only arise from a personal vendetta. There is definitely more to the story that Countdown Season 2 would have addressed, which does not seem likely anytime soon now.
