ABC’s High Potential is heading into Season 2 with its most urgent storyline at the forefront: Morgan Gillory is closer than ever to uncovering the truth about her missing husband, Roman. The Season 1 finale, Let’s Play, ended with a tense reveal when Karadec told Morgan he finally knew Roman’s location, a cliffhanger that sets the tone for the September 16 return.

Kaitlin Olson, who not only stars as Morgan but also acts as an executive producer, recently reflected on the future of High Potential. Speaking with Deadline Hollywood, Olson explained why Morgan’s struggles have connected with viewers. She referenced Morgan’s conversation with Selena in the pilot, saying,

“The fact that there’s a lot of really exceptionally intelligent people in the world who don’t necessarily find it all that amazing. I think it must be very lonely at the very least. We also know we can be on the verge or finding Roman, the father of her firstborn.”

Olson emphasized that Season 2 will explore more of the cost of Morgan’s gift, especially on her children. With the Game Maker still a threat and Roman’s story emerging, the stakes are higher than ever, and the cast wants fans to be ready for a season that will change everything.

High Potential season 2 puts Roman’s disappearance front and center

Season 2 of High Potential wastes no time throwing Morgan back into danger, with the Game Maker’s influence still driving much of the action. The premiere episode, “Pawns,” airing September 16, finds Morgan trying to protect her family while being pulled into another case connected to his twisted games.

The LAPD faces a choice: either follow Morgan’s instincts or risk another fatal outcome. This thread runs straight into Checkmate, the September 23 episode, where the team seeks answers about unresolved crimes, and Morgan becomes convinced that the Game Maker is behind them.

At the same time, Daphne and Oz begin searching for Roman, connecting the personal mystery to the procedural cases. By the September 30 episode, Eleven Minutes, Morgan starts to open up more to Ava about her father, forcing Ava to face truths she isn’t ready for, while a man’s murder reveals a motive rooted in a troubled past.

Alongside the Game Maker storyline, new cast members change the dynamic. Steve Howey joins as the precinct’s new captain, creating tension in how the team functions, while Mekhi Phifer appears in a recurring role. Their presence broadens High Potential beyond the original core group and raises questions about trust within the LAPD.

Olson has been clear that she wants to show Morgan making mistakes this season rather than solving every case perfectly. That means her choices will sometimes backfire, especially when her children become more involved in the ongoing story. Elliot’s intelligence and struggles at school are set to be explored in more detail, while Ava could develop a stronger social life, something Morgan might even envy.

Behind the scenes, Olson has also taken on the role of executive producer, providing her direct input on Morgan’s character development and the writing of supporting characters. Showrunner Todd Harthan has promised that Season 2 will explore the rest of the cast more deeply, including Selena’s leadership struggles and Daphne and Oz’s partnership outside of Morgan.

The writers have planned 18 episodes, leaving room for both case-of-the-week investigations and long-term arcs about Roman’s disappearance. With High Potential having wrapped up Season 1 as ABC’s most-watched new series in six years, expectations are high. Viewers now understand that the answers about Roman are near, and Season 2 is when the search finally becomes unavoidable.
