According to her co-star from an interview with Deadline, Matthew Goode mentioned that it was.

"One of the greatest days of her life..."

What exactly happened that made this particular day so special? Goode recently revealed the full story to Deadline, and...it involves a countryside wedding, unexpected cheer, and 22 empty rosé bottles.

A countryside Downton Abbey shoot turns into an unforgettable memory

When filming the wedding of Lady Mary and Henry Talbot during Downton Abbey Season 6, the cast found themselves tucked away in a beautiful Oxfordshire location.

The scene was meant to be kept under wraps, shot quietly with just the key ensemble around. Matthew Goode, who portrayed Henry, recalled how a modest garden belonging to a former Concorde pilot ended up hosting an impromptu celebration none of them planned for.

Their green room that day was the man's backyard, and it turned out to be the perfect setting for some unscripted memories that the cast would go on to create.

Maggie Smith's best day on set came when the pilot emerged with a chilled bottle of rosé and placed it on the table. Goode opened up by saying,

"It's going to sound jolly unprofessional...but it's f*king funny."

With the sun going down and the bottle practically begging to be poured, Goode gave in. When he admitted to wanting a glass, soon enough, more actors joined him, especially those who didn't have lines to deliver that day.

By the time the shoot wrapped, 22 bottles of rosé had been shared among the cast. The mood was light, laughter was everywhere, and no one got carried away. Goode added,

"No one was drunk. But my god, were we merry."

Why that day meant so much to Maggie Smith

The Harry Potter star, Maggie Smith, had been a powerhouse throughout all six seasons of Downton Abbey and the two films that followed. Her role as Violet Crawley wasn't just comic relief, but it was the show's backbone.

That day, though, wasn't about scripted quips or costume drama. It was about being surrounded by her co-stars, enjoying the rare freedom of a sunny day without the usual rigid schedule. Goode revealed,

"We actually gave Maggie Smith one of the greatest days of her life..."

Goode further added;

"She came off [set], and she said, I think that might've been my favorite day on a set ever."

There was no grandeur, nothing elaborate at all. Just a relaxed shoot, good company, and shared laughter. The fact that this moment stood out in a career as expansive as Smith's says a lot.

It wasn't just any day at Downton Abbey. It became a fond memory in the minds of the cast, especially for the late Maggie Smith.

Matthew Goode further joked around and said,

"I wouldn't do it again though for any future producers listening..."

Downton Abbey may be known for all of its grandeur, but behind the scenes, it was simple joys like this one that left the most lasting impressions.

For Maggie Smith, it wasn't about the spotlight. It was about the warmth of togetherness, a touch of rosé, and the rare magic of a day that felt just right.
