One Piece Season 3 star Xolo Maridueña shares his preparation for Ace from Cape Town

Netflix's adaptation of the pirate fantasy adventure, One Piece Season 3, is currently in production ahead of the second season's release in March 2026. As fans prepare for an adventure-filled journey with Luffy and the Straw Hats towards the Grand Line, the cast and crew are preparing for the new season in Cape Town, Africa.

After much speculation regarding this casting, Netflix recently unveiled Xolo Maridueña as Portgas D. Ace in the live-action adaptation of the beloved anime and manga series. Maridueña, who has previously worked with the global streamer on Cobra Kai as Miguel Diaz, revealed some pictures from his time filming as Ace in Cape Town.

Xolo Maridueña reveals One Piece Season 3 filming update from Cape Town

One Piece Season 3, the live-action adaptation of the manga series, was among the quickest to be renewed by Netflix. The live-action series was renewed for a third season even before the Season 2 premiere date was announced. Nevertheless, Season 3 officially began production in November 2025 for the pirate adventure with Luffy and the original Straw Hats crew.

The global streamer revealed in a November 25 announcement that the Straw Hats were starting production in Cape Town for One Piece Season 3. The original Straw Hat crew, Monkey D. Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji, have all assembled for the third season. As per the streamer, series regulars Iñaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Taz Skylar are all returning as their characters.

Joining them will be Xolo Maridueña as Portgas D. Ace. Ace is a significant character of the manga, being the adopted brother of the protagonist, Luffy. Ever since it was revealed that filming was already ongoing for Season 3, fans of the show have been eating up every single reveal about it.

So, the pictures from Maridueña about his time filming in Cape Town were a welcome update about One Piece Season 3.


One Piece Season 2: Everything we know

While any update about One Piece Season 3 is extremely exciting, we're a ways away from its release, and for now, we have the second season and the adventure for the Grand Line to look forward to.

The logline for Season 2 reads:

"Netflix’s epic high-seas pirate adventure, ‘One Piece,’ returns for Season 2—unleashing fiercer adversaries and the most perilous quests yet. Luffy (Godoy) and the Straw Hats set sail for the extraordinary Grand Line—a legendary stretch of sea where danger and wonder await at every turn. As they journey through this unpredictable realm in search of the world’s greatest treasure, they’ll encounter bizarre islands and a host of formidable new enemies."

Apart from the Straw Hats crew, season 2 also includes Charithra Chandra as Miss Wednesday, Mikaela Hoover as Tony Tony Chopper, Rigo Sanchez as Dragon, Yonda Thomas as Igaram, Lera Abova as Miss All-Sunday, and Katey Sagal as Dr. Kureha, among several other additions.
