The Last of Us Season 2 brought to center stage the rivalry between the militant organization Washington Liberation Front (WLF) and the cult group Seraphites. In Season 2, episode 4, titled ‘Day One,' we see the two groups not only fighting the infected but also among themselves. Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced), who are on the way to Seattle to confront the WLF members who killed Joel (Pedro Pascal), get stuck in the midst of the violent chaos between the two.
In the episode, WLF leader Isaac (played by Jeffrey Wright) tortures a Seraphite (played by Ryan Masson) to find out details about the next attack. However, later we see Ellie and Dina come upon the bodies of WLF soldiers, who were killed by Seraphites. Making the whole interrogation exercise futile, especially in the bigger scenario where the number of infected is surging.
What happened in The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 4 titled ‘Day One’?
The episode starts with Isaac casually throwing a grenade into the Fedra soldier truck and walking away with some locals. We quickly get acclimated to Isaac’s cold-blooded killer attitude.
Later we find Isaac interrogating a Seraphite in the most brutal way possible to get information about their next attack. He heats up a copper pan on the stove calmly, recalling past stories, and brings it to a naked and beaten Seraphite. Despite inciting much fear, the Seraphite refuses to divulge any details.
The back-and-forth between Isaac and the Seraphite brings forth the idea that both groups have previously used extreme violence to fight and retaliate. Neither one owns up to their brutalities.
It is clear that this fight has been long time with no end in sight. At the moment we even forget that the real fight is against the infected, and this detour will only prolong the suffering. The Seraphite also taunts Isaac, saying that many WLF members have joined their group. When the Seraphite refuses to give any information, Isaac shoots him dead.
Though in the previous episode, we get a glimpse of the violence between the groups, the scene in this episode is the first time we see the real hatred that the two carry against each other. The episode also holds a deeper meaning, showcasing the extent humans will go to show their true nature of retribution, even in an apocalyptic world.
On the other hand, Ellie and Dina find themselves in hot water. They find a room where many of the WLF members are hanging dead from the ceiling (the possible attack that Isaac was interrogating about). Their timing was unfortunate, as they get attacked by WLF members who think they are part of the Seraphites. How Ellie and Dina deal with the two groups remains to be seen.
