Season 2 of Billy the Kid was majorly about the tumultuous life of Henry McCarthy, aka Billy the Kid, as he deals with the war-like situation in Lincoln County and the fallout of his own escalating relationships. The two-part season involves some key events that viewers should keep in mind before watching the final season 3 for the showdown.

In season 2, Billy switches his party from supporting the house faction to aligning with Tunstall, with a determination to support the oppressed farmers. His move challenges the corrupt powers in Lincoln County while a new Sheriff, Pat Garret, is introduced, setting up the stage for more confrontations with Billy. Dulcinea del Tobosco continues to be Billy's romantic interest, influencing his decisions. Towards the end of season 2, the conflict escalates into a blood bath with Riley's men looking for Billy. Riley shoots Tullstan, and this further worsens the situation.

Season 2 of Billy the Kid is all about the buildup to the climactic war between the regulator, that is, Billy's gang, and the House, that is, Riley's men. Riley and Murphy were eager to establish their monopoly on Lincoln City, but it was John Tunstall who stood tall against it. At the time, Billy and Jesse were employed by Riley to teach their rival a lesson. Over time, Billy understood that Tunstall is a man of conscience, while Riley and Murphy are the ones exploiting local farmers to establish their dominance. When Billy joined Tunstall's team, this kicked off a war between the two parties.

Murphy and Riley then orchestrated a scheme to eliminate McSween by charging him with a false murder case. They were also facing pressure from Catron and Edgar to kill Billy, who they consider a long-term threat. Former Deputy Sheriff Brewer was loyal to Tunstall and had already warned Billy about Murphy and Riley's plot. Billy ambushed Sheriff Brady, thwarting Riley's plan and costing the sheriff's life.

Billy and Murphy went ahead with their revenge and filed murder charges against Billy for killing an officer of the law. This made him the most wanted man in the region, compelling him to live in hiding. After this event, Billy, McSween, and the entire gang became outlaws, officially. Murphy and Riley used this narrative in public to brainwash them and establish their control.

Billy shared a history of war, with even his family getting destroyed a couple of years ago, but Billy chose to fight as he wanted to survive, just like how his father had dreamed of. Murphy's men are in search of Billy and McSween. By the end, Jesse was able to find Billy but was unable to pull the trigger. Amidst the conflict, Riley ends up killing Tullstan, further escalating the situation into a full-fledged war.

Now, the old sheriff's death has left a power position empty, and to fill that in came another corrupt sheriff hired by Murphy and Riley, who have become the most influential people in the town. Under Pat's surveillance, Billy is imprisoned while Dulcinea comes to visit him. Garret, deep down, acknowledging the mistake Riley and Murphy made by killing Tullstan, let Dulcinea meet Billy.

Season 2 ends with Dulcinea orchestrating Billy's daring escape and the couple fleeing the police station. Billy is free and alive, and the new sheriff is chasing him with all his might.

Therefore, we can say that this leaves season 3 with either Billy choosing to keep hiding for life or confronting the corrupt men for the showdown. Don't forget to catch Billy the Kid on MGM+, premiering 28 September 2025.
