Only Murders in the Building Season 5 finally reveals the Newark, Newark poster's story & co-creator says "it was all our art team"

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 is quite promising. With only three episodes out, the show is already receiving numerous positive responses from the viewers and critics alike. Besides the already humorous and intriguing premise, there are certain elements that only a true fan of Only Murders in the Building will be drawn to, and one of these elements is the poster of Newark, Newark that we see in Oliver Putnam’s apartment.

This huge poster is also very much present in Only Murders in the Building Season 5. While the trio discusses Lester’s death, the poster is visible. In a recent interview with the show’s co-creator, John Hoffman, TV Line discussed the poster and everything about it.

Finally, after four seasons, Only Murders in the Building Season 5 opens up about the context of the Newark, Newark poster that we see inside the apartment. This poster is not just huge but also has enough screentime in season 5. The board on which the trio discusses the details of the murder is right in front of the huge poster. Hence, viewers are no doubt intrigued by the story behind it.

The reason Oliver keeps this huge Newark, Newark poster is because of the $400 loan from the mob. The poster is reminiscent of Oliver’s past. Co-creator John Hoffman says that all the credit for bringing a background story to the poster goes to the art team. He says,

“I did not have anything to do with that poster — it was all our art team.”

He also adds that the art team gave him the choice of many other posters. He chose the Newark, Newark one out of the options given to him. His nod towards the art team is a well-deserved acknowledgement. The immense creative talent that comes together to create such an interesting series is truly worth appreciating. No wonder Only Murders in the Building Season 5 received a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The story of the loan behind the poster’s presence in the apartment is a depiction of how every piece of art in the series is carefully chosen to cater to the storyline. After so many years, we finally get the context behind the poster, and that too does not disappoint. It enhances the aspects of Oliver’s personality. As the trio tries to dive deep into Lester’s murder case, they come across much new information that helps them get a clear picture of who the murderer could be.

Though the police have already announced that Lester’s death was due to an accident, the trio has no intention of believing the story and does their own research instead.
