More about Outlander: Blood of My Blood and Jocasta and Murtagh
The Outlander prequel Blood of My Blood explores some of the most adored characters' early histories in greater detail. Rory Alexander's portrayal of young Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser is among the most talked-about characters and known as Jamie Fraser's devoted godfather in the original series. Murtagh is a younger, energetic, charming, and mischievous version of the character.
Murtagh is portrayed in Outlander: Blood of My Blood to be profoundly in love with Ellen MacKenzie, despite the fact that they have yet to speak. He's confident, flirtatious, and frequently seen enjoying the raucous MacKenzie parties. At the same time, he has a strong chemistry with Ellen's younger sister, Jocasta MacKenzie, who is already married but definitely interested in Murtagh.
In a recent interview, Rory Alexander discussed this. He clarified that although Murtagh is aware of Jocasta's interest, his heart is still with Ellen. He claimed that even if Jocasta is staring at him, he is constantly thinking about Ellen. A later scene in the series, however, puts Jocasta and Murtagh together in a more serious setting, hinting at a potential deeper bond.
"There comes a point where Jocasta and him have a face-off and he can't avoid her. But his feelings for Ellen never quite disappear, even in the face of Jocasta."
Fans of the original Outlander will recall that Murtagh and Jocasta grew close later in life, even falling in love. Even if Murtagh is still interested in someone else, this prequel hints at the early stages of their love.
A hunt for wild boar is another significant scene from the first episode. Despite not being depicted, the hunt is a significant part of Murtagh's narrative. Jocasta approaches him and strikes up a discussion after he returns covered in boar's blood, thinking it was his own. This scene foreshadows what's to come and is subdued yet significant.
As a token of his affection, Murtagh offers Ellen a bracelet he carved out of the boar's tusks in the novels. In the original series, Claire inherits this similar bracelet.
Alexander made appearances on Alex Rider and Pistol before joining Outlander: Blood of My Blood, and he co-starred with Mark Rylance in the movie Inland. His portrayal of Murtagh gives the character new vitality while preserving the intense devotion that fans are accustomed to and love.
