The last season of the TV show Outlander is officially going to air in early 2026. Starz announced this at the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con, where the network stated that the eighth season will be the last chapter of the saga of the Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser tale. The final season, consisting of 10 episodes, will try to put an end to the extensive narrative.

Production on the final season concluded in autumn 2024, and the post-production process is continuing. The show will explore some of the aspects of Diana Gabaldon's ninth novel, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, but it will not continue with the upcoming book since that has yet to be published and scheduled for a release date.

With the announcement came a release by Starz of the initial teaser clip revealing foreboding indications of Jamie Fraser's destiny, generating anticipation among fans.

Release details of Outlander Season 8

The eighth and last season of Outlander will be released in early 2026, although no specific date has yet been made public. This timing places Season 8's debut after the release of the prequel spinoff series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, which will release on August 8, 2025.

The last season will have fewer episodes than some in the past, with just 10 episodes set to be made, compared to Season 7's 16 episodes. The showrunners want Season 8 to be a compressed, meaningful finale as opposed to an epic goodbye.

Story and adaptation strategy for the final season

Season 8 will not be strictly based on the book series because the last novel by Diana Gabaldon has not yet been released. Rather, the TV storyline will include the content of the ninth book, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, and may even give an inkling of the happenings in the upcoming tenth book.

The strategy enables the series to conclude Claire and Jamie's story differently from the novel's epic. The last season will reportedly cover significant plotlines and give the characters closure for their storylines. The Comic-Con teaser gave a glimpse of profound developments, such as a foreboding prophecy of what will happen to Jamie in an upcoming war.

Cast and production updates

Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe reprise their roles as Jamie and Claire Fraser, respectively, and other regular cast members Sophie Skelton (Brianna), Richard Rankin (Roger), and John Bell (Young Ian). New arrivals include Kieran Bew as Captain Charles Cunningham and Carla Woodcock as Amaranthus Grey.

Even though Balfe could not attend the Comic-Con panel because of another project, she did record a message saying how much she was looking forward to the final season.

Filming for Season 8 was finished in September 2024, and the post-production is continuing as the show readies itself for release. The cast and production team have both cited a camaraderie feel and an end to a regimen that has existed for more than a decade during the filming process.

Prequel series and future of the Outlander franchise

Though Outlander will conclude after Season 8, the franchise will go on with the prequel series named Outlander: Blood of My Blood. The new series will follow the romance of Jamie Fraser's parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie.

The prequel is scheduled to premiere before the last season screens, following the Outlander universe beyond the main series. There is no indication of a Season 9 or 10 of the original series, marking Season 8 as the definitive end.
